autos, cars, hp, indian, member content, motorcycles & scooters, what types of cars & motorcycles do the bhpians own?

Recently someone mentioned that the fact is, more BHPians own Rs 15 to 20+ lakh cars than Rs 6 lakh ones. But is it so?

BHPian ninjatalli recently shared this with other enthusiasts.

Click here to see what category your car falls in.

  • What vehicle do you own currently?
  • How many vehicles does the average bhpian own?
  • How many of us are there who prefer not to have the hassles of vehicle ownership?
  • How many of us own only 2-wheelers?
  • How many of us have moved to EVs?
  • And so many more…

It is always interesting to understand the break-up of vehicle ownership across the forum. Ask any BHPian and depending on the amount of time he’s been on the forum, the answer will be as varied as possible.

Recently someone mentioned that the fact is, more BHPians own 15 to 20+ lakh cars than 6 lakh rupee ones. But is it so?

Data provides the true facts. So let’s get going and see what facts the data throws back at us.

Notes

  • If you are confused about which segment to put your car in, refer to threads like these – 1, 2, 3
  • Similarly if you are confused about your two-wheeler, refer to threads like these – 1, 2
  • If you still think your vehicle is not represented in the above list, mark it under ‘Others’ and put up a post explaining the same.
  • Cycles haven’t been considered in the above list so pardon that omission for now.

Following is a quick explanation for each segment as posted by BHPian GreasyCarb55.

  • B2 Segment – These are your premium hatchbacks. Ex – Hyundai i20, Maruti Baleno, Toyota Glanza, Honda Jazz, Tata Altroz, etc
  • C1 Segment – These are your entry level sedans and larger suvs. Ex – KIA Sonet, Hyundai Venue, Tata Nexon, Maruti Brezza/Dzire, Honda Amaze, Hyundai Aura, Renault Kiger, Nissan Magnite, Tata Punch, etc.

  • D1 Segment – These include the larger and more powerful sedans and the larger suvs. Ex – Skoda Octavia, Honda Civic, Toyota Corolla/Innova, Mahindra XUV 700, Tata Safari/Harrier, Jeep Compass.
  • D2 Segment – These include some of the most premium sedans and suvs without touching the Luxury brands like Lexus, BMW, Audi etc Ex- Honda Accord, Skoda Superb/Kodiaq, Toyota Camry/Fortuner, Ford Endeavor (RIP 3.2 Inline 5)
  • Premium – These are your luxury brands and their sedans and SUVs, this includes everything from the smaller 3 series/A4/C-Class to the big bad X7/Q7/GLE/GLS. Ex- Audi, Lexus, BMW, Porsche, Jaguar etc.
  • Utility – These are the big bad rugged 4X4s. Ex – Mahindra Thar, Force Gurkha, Maruti Gypsy (RIP), Toyota Hilux, Isuzu D-Max etc.
  • The motorcycles and scooters should be self-explanatory.

Here’s what GTO had to say about the matter:

Or maybe they contribute with threads more! Here’s our ownership reviews section, sorted by thread start date (latest first). I see more 15+ lakh cars in there than <10 lakh ones.

Here’s what BHPian Swapnil4585 had to say about the matter:

  • D1 – Corolla Altis.
  • C2 – Ciaz (not mine, a neighbor has kept it with me while he is abroad for 2 more years).
  • 125 cc Bajaj XCD (my beloved Spike Dudley in an over the top rope Royal Rumble).
  • Access 125 (which requires a spark plug every weekend).
  • HH Pleasure (my sister undertakes 150 km one-way tours on this 11-year-old machine).
  • Inazuma 250 (yet to join the garage, it is neither fully mine nor fully not yet mine).

Here’s what BHPian tchsvy had to say about the matter:

  • B1 – Nissan Micra Active
  • Gearless Scooter – Suzuki Access 125
  • Geared Motorbike – Honda CBR 250R

Pocket rockets!

Here’s what BHPian V.Narayan had to say about the matter:

Volvo XC60, Lexus ES300h and Amaze.

Here’s what BHPian GreasyCarb55 had to say about the matter:

While I personally don’t own any cars or motorcycles our family does have 2 cars and 2 two-wheelers.

  • C2 – 2017 Honda City ZX Petrol CVT, this is dad’s main car.
  • MPV – 2011 Toyota Innova 2.5 V Diesel, our designated highway machine, my mom absolutely loves this car even though she doesn’t drive at all and refuses to sell it, type 2 converted to type 4 after a crash in 2016.
  • Scooter – 2013 Vespa LX 125, mom’s scooter, regularly used till 2019 looking to sell it off as we don’t need it anymore.
  • Motorcycle – 2014 Yamaha FZ-S, this was my uncle’s trusty FZ, has run for almost 70,000km without any issues. Unofficially handed down to me in 2020 so I could learn to ride. Looking to sell it and get an Interceptor/GT 650 or Duke 390 for college.

Here’s what BHPian Sanidhya mukund had to say about the matter:

  • Premium: Mercedes C-Class
  • Utility: 2021 Ertiga, 2016 Omni
  • Obsolete: Ford Ikon, Maruti Esteem, Tata Estate. They were C1 and C2 cars when new, but can’t fit into the current scheme anymore.
