Volkswagen has released new pictures and details about the ID. Buzz and ID. Buzz Cargo, ahead of their debut on March 9th.
Since we’ve already seen the exterior numerous times before, we’ll simply note they draw inspiration from the T1 Microbus and feature short overhangs as well as a retro-inspired front fascia with slender headlights. Volkswagen also confirmed the vans will ride on 18- to 21-inch wheels.
In terms of size, the ID. Buzz measures 185.5 inches (4,712 mm) long, 78.1 inches (1,985 mm) wide, and 76.3 inches (1,937 mm) tall with a wheelbase that spans 117.6 inches (2,988 mm). This means the model is 7.6 inches (193 mm) shorter than the T6.1, but has a similar wheelbase and is 3.2 inches (81 mm) wider.
The ID. Buzz will have a five-seat interior with 39.6 cubic feet (1,121 liters) of luggage space behind the second-row. The ID. Buzz Cargo, on the other hand, is a three seater that features a partition which separates the cabin from the rear luggage compartment. It promises to live up to its name as the model has a cargo capacity of more than 137.7 cubic feet (3,900 liters).
Volkswagen didn’t say much else about the cabin, but previous pictures have shown the ID. Buzz will feature a freestanding digital instrument cluster and an infotainment system with a portrait orientation. They’ll be joined by a minimalist center console, folding rear seats, and available two-tone upholstery.
The ID. Buzz will ride on the MEB platform and feature an 82 kWh battery pack that supplies a rear-mounted electric motor developing 201 hp (150 kW / 204 PS) and 229 lb-ft (310 Nm) of torque. Volkswagen declined to give a range estimate, but confirmed the model will have bi-directional charging, a Plug & Charge capability, and an electronically limited top speed of 90 mph (145 km/h).
While full details will be released next month, Volkswagen hinted the vans will offer a host of driver assistance systems. Among them will be a new Trained Parking function, which will automatically maneuver the ID. Buzz into and out of parking spaces. The model will also feature Car2X technology and the latest version of Travel Assist, which uses “crowdsourced data to facilitate forward and lateral guidance on a partly automated basis across the full speed range.”
The ID. Buzz will be launched in Europe this fall, while Americans can look forward to a long-wheelbase variant. Volkswagen has been coy about the latter, but confirmed it will be shown “within the coming year.”
