Simon Weston is a signwriter by trade and has owned his Mazda BT-50 for a couple of years.
Crafty: Why did you buy a BT-50?
Simon: A combination of things, it had a good review, yet it was on the more affordable side for the top models. I loved the sleek look which suits my business, and I have had BT-50s in the past and they have always performed well for me.

Crafty: What’s a typical work day for your ute?
Simon: Driving to and from quotes and meetings, carrying light tools and graphics associated with my trade to job sites and getting me around in life.
Crafty: Do you use it outside of work? For off-roading, camping or towing?
Simon: Yes, it’s my work ute and my personal ute. I have the 4×2 Hi Rider version.
I’m not into four-wheel driving. I do tow a camper-trailer and other trailers regularly and, hopefully, a caravan soon, but this is my everyday family ride.

Simon: Yes, 20-inch rims, flares, electric tow brakes and, of course, it’s fully wrapped – it’s what we do.
I also upgraded a heap of factory items, including tow pack, tint, ladder racks and sports bar, just to name a few.
Mods include 20-inch rims.
Crafty: Any problems?
Simon: I had a fuel pump leak early on, but that was easily fixed under warranty. It’s had a few recall items, but none of which I had an issue with.
And I have issues with poor radio signal/reception. I’ve read heaps of forums and it was a common issue with my model that seems to have improved with the latest model.
Featuring a sports bar.
Crafty: Anything else you’d like to do to it?
Simon: I’ve considered getting an after-market grille and headlights to finish off the look.
Simon uses the 4×2 Hi Rider for work and personal use.
Crafty: Would you buy another BT-50 next time?
Simon: Yes, already have, we just collected a new one two weeks ago for my tradesman at work; this is our fourth one since 2008.
“This is our fourth BT-50 since 2008.”
They have always been reliable for us, always look good and perform well and I find them to be more affordable than most of the competitors.
I find the BT-50s have the perfect balance of reliability, inclusions and price, so until I feel that’s not the case I don’t have a reason to change.
