The Goodwood Revival is an automotive event like no other. You are transported back in time from the moment you enter the historic circuit, with everyone dressed in vintage clothes and bathed in an immersive environment created by the Goodwood team. Not only are the historic cars incredible to look at, but the wheel-to-wheel racing they take part in is second to none.
Here are our top 10 Goodwood Revival moments of 2021.
John Whitmore Trophy
If you love classic Minis, this is the race for you. Goodwood’s high-speed nature means that success in these British icons is all about preserving momentum. With 30 cars on track and a driver change involved, competition is rife.
Some seriously heroic driving was on show, especially from a Mini that ended up drifting through the final chicane.
Jenson Button
The Revival attracts a lot of star drivers from all over the world, but undoubtedly one of the most popular is Jenson Button. Attending almost every year, for 2021 he piloted a Shelby Cobra alongside Alex Buncombe.
A poor start meant the 2009 F1 World Champion had his work cut out, but his charge through the field showed that the retired racer has still got it.
Settrington Cup
There’s a lot of impressive racing on show at Goodwood, but the cutest by far is the Settrington Cup. Children sprint to a series of Austin J40 pedal cars in true Le Mans style before dashing down the main straight for the finish line.
It might sound like child’s play, but the results are always very close.
Traffic jams
Usually, traffic is something we all hate, but at this Goodwood event what you’ll find idling is always special. Vintage racers from all eras mingle as they file in and out of the paddock. It’s also well worth spending some time watching priceless machines being tinkered with before a race.
Battle of the Brundles
Ex-F1 racer turned pundit Martin Brundle is no stranger to Goodwood or race tracks, however, he faced some tough competition from his son Alex in the Stirling Moss Memorial Trophy.
Watch as these iconic E-Types do battle with father and son displaying some serious rivalry.
Sussex Trophy
The Sussex Trophy is certainly one of the most beautiful races of the event with some truly legendary machines lining up on the grid. A rich mix of Ferrari, Lotus, and Jaguars race at full pace in the hope of taking home some silverware.
These cars are all from an era before ugly aero became the norm. Enjoy!
Real consequences
The crashes are never a highlight of motorsport, but this incident at the 2021 Revival reminded everyone that these classics are really racing. A classic Barracuda locked up under braking and ultimately crashed into the tight chicane before the main straight. Thankfully everyone was ok.
Over the years we’ve seen everything from priceless Ferraris to rarified Aston Martins make contact with a barrier.
Pre-war cars
Sure, the racers of the 1960s and ‘70s are probably the best known at the Revival, but watching pre-war cars skate about on skinny tires is endlessly entertaining. The Brooklands Trophy took place in the rain and provided quite the spectacle.
Sir Stirling Moss tribute
Last year the world lost one of the most famed racing drivers of all time, Sir Stirling Moss. His talent behind the wheel inspired many who followed him, and his memory was honoured at the 2021 Revival.
Many of his racing cars took to the track, including the legendary Mercedes-Benz 300 SLR that won the Mille Miglia.
Stirling Memorial Trophy
This race was truly befitting of the man it honoured. Cars of the 1960s gathered to race as the sunset overhead, something that creates a truly unique race. Battling Jaguar E-Types, incredible Ferrari 250 GTOs, and rare Porsche 356s fought for the silverware.
It’s well worth a watch.
