Nobody wants to be stranded by the side of the road. And while brand new vehicles rarely break down completely, dealing with recalls or buggy infotainment systems is a pain. Luckily, Consumer Reports rates pickup truck reliability in multiple ways. The 2019-2022 Ram 1500 reliability leaves its competition in the dust.
Which pickup truck is most reliable?
According to Consumer Reports, no full-size light-duty truck can beat the Ram 1500 reliability. Ram won the best score thanks to customer feedback on its last three model years. No truck beat the 2022 Ram 1500’s predicted reliability score.

Consumer Reports gives each new vehicle two different reliability scores: new models based on the brand’s history and lightly used models based on owner feedback. The Ram 1500 won both categories.
When Consumer Reports polled Ram 1500 owners on their ownership experience, the feedback was positive. The last reliability issue owners consistently reported was infotainment system bugs in the 2019 model. 2019 was the first year of the Ram 1500’s fifth generation. Since then, it seems Ram has addressed most reliability problems.
Is Ram more reliable than Ford?
The Consumer Reports reviewers give each new truck a score out of 5 for the predicted reliability of its new model year. The 2022 Ram 1500 reliability score was 3/5, or average. The 2022 Ford F-150’s score fell to a 2/5, tying the Nissan Titan.

This year, the new generation of the Toyota Tundra fell to a 3/5, tying the Ram. Both the GMC Sierra and Chevy Silverado 1500 plummeted to a 1/5.
Both compact and heavy-duty pickup trucks earn much higher reliability scores from Consumer Reports. The Ford Ranger, Honda Ridgeline, and Toyota Tacoma all meet or exceed the Ram 1500’s reliability score. In addition, most of the heavy-duty trucks–such as the Ram 2500–outscore all the full-size, light-duty pickup trucks.

Do Ram trucks have problems?
The 2022 Ram 1500 leads its class in Consumer Reports’ reliability score. But the 2022 Ram 1500 Classic is at the back of the pack. In long-term rankings, the Ram 2500 beats out both light-duty models.

Ram offers its new, fifth-generation 1500 truck exclusively with a four-door cab and segment-leading interior. Its not surprising that this pickup starts at a higher price than competitors. For this reason, Ram still offers bare-bones work truck configurations of its fifth-generation 1500 badged as the Classic.
Consumer Reports polled 2019 Ram 1500 Classic owners. These customers reported already having problems with the fuel system, brakes, and the powered equipment (door locks, windows, wipers, etc.). For this reason, CR gave the 2022 Ram 1500 Classic a 1/5 predicted reliability score.
Owners of the regular fifth-generation 2019 Ram 1500 reported issues with the truck’s power equipment and malfunctions of its in-car electronics. Ram appears to have addressed both these trouble spots: owners of 2020, 2021, and 2022 Ram 1500 pickup trucks are reporting less reliability issues every year.
Ram 1500 Reliability conclusion
According to Consumer Reports, most full-size, light-duty trucks aren’t as reliable as other trucks. But in its segment, the Ram 1500’s reliability stands out.
