There was time when eBike manufacturers were happy to merely bolt an electric motor and an awkward battery pack to existing an existing bicycle frame and be done with it. Now, more and more companies are getting adventurous with packaging and are subsequently creating hybrid machines that can happily replace low capacity petrol powered scooters.
US firm Juiced Bikes is one such outfit and its unique HyperScrambler 2 completely rips up the eBike rulebook and results in an innovative, stupidly cool and ridiculously practical package that is happy tearing up the Tarmac as well as gravel trails.
Unlike its HyperScrmabler predecessor, the unique, monkey-bike style frame now houses the option of two 52v 19.2Ah battery packs, which can deliver an electric range of around 100-miles on a single charge. The intelligent power system cleverly juggles juice between the two packs and delivers optimum power when needed. The pair can also be charged simultaneously in just two hours when a fast charging option is selected.
HyperScrambler 2 is also the first from Juiced Bikes to feature dual-suspension at the rear and the includes the impressive 1000W custom-designed Retroblade motor with 2000W peak power, designed in collaboration with Bafang Motors.
Unlike petrol powered mopeds, the HyperScrambler 2 features a 60T chain ring and pedals, which are fitted with dual pedal, torque and cadence sensors, for an exceptionally smooth and reactive pedal assist experience.
Seeing as this little ripper can hit 30mph, Juiced Bikes has also introduced powerful electric disc brakes, as well as a security alarm system, an oversized, super bright LED motorcycle headlamp and LED turn signals for a safe on-road experience.
In the United States, the HyperScrambler 2 is regarded as an eBike, so must adhere to local laws in terms of the power it can deliver and the top speeds it can hit. But some manufacturers get around this fact by offering an off-road mode, which allows for full power to be delivered with minimal pedalling.
Muddy and often unclear laws and legislation in the UK mean most eBikes have to be limited to 15mph and electrical assistance has to be offered only when pedalling, but this could soon change. Bikes like the HyperScrambler 2 could offer a great electric alternative to the petrol scooter and moped market, which is what many customers are crying out for. A low cost, easy to maintain mode of transport that looks this cool could prove a formula for success on these shores.
