All with video to back them up, these are some of the quickest production cars to ever lap Germany’s most famous, difficult track.
Mercedes-Benz 1 of 10 Mercedes-AMG GT Black Series – 6:43.616
Thanks to some ridiculous aero and a flat-plane crank, 720-hp version of AMG’s well-used 4.0-liter twin-turbo V-8, the GT Black Series was able to set a time of 6:43 in late 2020, enough to take the crown from the Aventador SVJ.
2 of 10 Lamborghini Aventador SVJ – 6:44.97
Before the COVID-19 pandemic, the Nürburgring lap record wars were fought by Porsche and Lamborghini. Just a year after the GT2 RS stunned everyone by by beating the Huracán Performante, Lamborghini fired back with the Aventador SVJ. It’s two seconds quicker than the Porsche, which is mighty considering its size and weight.
3 of 10 Porsche 911 GT2 RS – 6:47.3
Porsche let the Lamborghini Huracan Performante hold on to its lap record for six months, before obliterating it by nearly five seconds. Apparently, the GT2 RS broke the Performante’s. Astounding for a rear-wheel drive, rear-engine car.
4 of 10 Lamborghini Huracán Performante – 6:52.01
Thanks to a radical new active aerodynamic system and 640 horsepower, the Lamborghini Huracán Performante is one of the quickest production cars to lap the Nurburgring. It’s 28 seconds quicker than a standard Huracan, which is by no means, a slow car. Lamborghini’s even got the data to back up this astonishing time.
5 of 10 Porsche 911 GT3 RS (991.2) – 6:56.4
Thanks to new tires, heavily revised suspension, more downforce, and a heroic drive by Kevin Estre, the 991.2 GT3 RS shaved 24 seconds off its predecessor’s Nüburgring lap time. A crazy result for a car with “only” 520 hp.
6 of 10 Porsche 918 Spyder – 6:57.00
For four years, the Porsche 918 Spyder held the Nürburgring production car lap record, before being dethroned by the Huracan Performante. The 918’s blistering time was a result of an 887-hp hybrid drivetrain, with an electric motor on the front axle, providing incredible grip.
7 of 10 Lamborghini Aventador LP 750-4 SV – 6:59.73
The Aventador LP 750-4 SV is the lighter, hardcore version of the standard Aventador, which can still run a 7:25.00 at the ‘Ring. Additional aerodynamic tweaks to the car’s body make it even more slippery through the air, and extra power from its 6.5-liter V-12 helps too. It’s astounding that something this big is so damn quick.
8 of 10 Ferrari 488 Pista
The 488 Pista has a knack for breaking track records, having done it at Hockenheim and Top Gear’s test track. Powered by a 710-horsepower twin-turbo V-8, it’s just a few seconds off machinery twice the price.
9 of 10 Dodge Viper ACR -7:01.3
The Dodge Viper ACR never ran the sub-7-minute lap everyone hoped it would, but it still worked its way into the history books. It’s the quickest manual-transmission car ever at the track. And it went much faster than any other American car.
10 of 10 Mercedes-AMG GT R Pro – 7:04.63
The Mercedes-AMG GT R Pro is a track-focused version of the already brutally quick GT R, with more aero and a manually adjustable coilover suspension. It was able to lay down a time six seconds faster than the car it’s based on, coming within 3.5 seconds of the Viper.
