To start the new year, we are taking a look at the cheapest new car in every major segment right now.
We found that the cheapest passenger cars on offer in South Africa are the BAIC D20 Hatch and the Bajaj Qute – which both fall into the hatchback category.
The other end of the spectrum sees the BMW 420i as the cheapest new two-door coupe on offer – at a starting price of R801,438.
The two-door coupe is followed by the estate and then convertible segments in terms of price – the latter of which are two of the smallest segments in the market.
Popular cars
In contrast, the most populated categories generally feature the cheapest vehicles, such as the hatchback and crossover segments.
Buying the cheapest car from both these segments will cost less than half of the new BMW 420i Coupe.
Thanks to the new Eleksa CityBug, the electric car category has become much more affordable in 2022, too.
The entry point is lowered to R230,000 – compared to the R686,400 you have to spend on the Mini Cooper SE, which is now the second cheapest EV on the market.
