Indian carmaker Tata Motors has confirmed that it will be ramping up production of its electric cars and SUVs to meet the increasing demand for EVs in the country. Tata Motors has been receiving on average 5,500 to 6,000 bookings for its EV lineup every month.
Tata Motors currently has two electric vehicles on sale in the passenger car market in the form of the Tigor and Nexon EVs. Tata also sells the XPres-T EV, the taxi version of the Tigor EV in the Indian market.
Speaking to the Press Trust Of India, Shailesh Chandra, Tata Motors MD for Passenger Vehicle and Electric Vehicles stated, “We are seeing that the demand is significantly outpacing the supply. The numbers are just the ones which we are able to supply, the demand is definitely much stronger which is reflected in the number of bookings with us.”
Chandra told the Press Trust of India that Tata Motors has been receiving around 6,000 EV orders every month.
However, the company has been unable to meet the burgeoning demand for its electric vehicles which has led to a backlog of orders. Tata Motors currently is producing around 3,300 to 3,400 electric vehicles every month.
The company is now looking to ramp up production numbers and is already taking steps to ensure this. Some of these steps include design modifications as well as the sourcing of semiconductors from multiple suppliers to ensure a steady supply that these essential items.
Chandra told PTI, “These steps have allowed us to significantly ramp up production. Just seven months ago we were producing just 600 units but then such actions have helped us to increase it to 1,500-1,700 levels and then 3,000-3500 levels. This will continue.”
Chandra also talked about Tata Motors’ aspirations for the new financial year. He stated, “Last year, we grew by five folds, and therefore the aspiration would be definitely to grow not in increments but in multiples.”
As per data provided by the Federation of Automobile Dealers Associations (FADA), Tata Motors sold a total of 15,198 EVs in the financial year 2021-22. The carmaker accounted for 85.37 per cent of the electric passenger cars sold in the country over the last financial year.
Leading the charge for Tata Motors in the electric vehicle market was the Nexon EV. The electric version of the Nexon SUV is the best selling electric car in the country right now and Tata Motors is expected to reveal a version of the SUV with a larger battery pack and range later this month.
Tata Motors also recently unveiled the Curvv electric SUV coupe concept. The Curvv preview a production EV set to arrive in two years that will sit above the Nexon in Tata’s electric vehicle portfolio.
