Tata Motors is now the largest electric car manufacturer in India with over 70 per cent market share. However, other manufacturers are now gearing up to conquer the EV segment by launching newer EVs in the market.
To assert their dominance, Tata Motors could launch two new EVs in the Indian market. With these new launched, Tata Motors will now have a more affordable EV and an EV that is also more suitable for long rides.
Starting with the long-range EV, Tata Motors may soon introduce Nexon EV with a bigger 40kWh battery pack.
Thanks to this beefier battery pack, expect this model to have a considerable jump in overall range and according to some reliable sources, this uprated model of Tata Nexon EV could do 400+ kms on a single charge.
However, the additional 10kWh increase in battery capacity has resulted in a weight gain of 100 kgs more than the current model. So, to counter this added weight, engineers at Tata Motors could spend a bit more time tuning the suspension for best performance.
In addition to Tata Nexon EV, Tata Motors also has Tata Tigor EV with an advanced 350V Ziptron EV system. This vehicle uses a 26kWh battery pack and supplies most of the stored energy to a 74bhp electric motor with 170Nm of torque.
Now, Tata Motors is rumoured that the company planning to use this powertrain in the smaller Tiago to create the Tata Tiago EV.
If launched, Tata Tiago EV will be one of the most affordable electric cars in the country and thanks to the powertrain from Tigor EV, it could even do 300+kms on a single charge under ideal conditions.
Speaking about the range, Tata Motors claims a range of 312 kms on a single charge for the present version of the Nexon EV and this model comes with a 30.2kWh Li-ion battery pack and it is powered by a 3 Phase Permanent Magnet Synchronous (PMS) Motor with 127.23bhp of peak power and 245Nm of peak torque.
At present, the Tata Nexon EV range starts from Rs 14.54 lakh (ex-showroom, India) for the XM variant and this price goes up to Rs 17.15 lakh (ex-showroom, India) for the top-end Dark XZ+ Lux variant.
So, expect the Tata Nexon EV with the larger battery pack to be priced around Rs 1 to Rs 1.5 lakh more than the outgoing model.
In comparison, the Tata Tigor EV range starts from the base XE trim, which is priced at Rs 12.24 lakh (ex-showroom, India) and moves up to Rs 13.39 lakh (ex-showroom, India) for the top-end XZ+ DT trim level.
In comparison, we expect Tata Motors to price the Tata Tiago EV aggressively with a starting price of just under Rs 10 lakh.
Tata Motor is also keen on building a viable road map for the future and the company is committed to staying in this course of making EVs mainstream. To do this, Tata Motors will take some help from other entities under the Tata Group such as Tata Autocomp, Tata Power, Tata Chemicals, Croma, and Tata Motors Finance.
