The Chinese battery manufacturer Sunwoda Electric Vehicle Battery plans to invest around 12 billion yuan (1.7 billion euros) in the construction of a production facility with an annual capacity of 30 GWh in Zhuhai in the southern Chinese province of Guangdong.
In addition to production, the site will also focus on the development of battery cells, battery modules and battery systems. There are no details yet on when construction will start or when it will be completed.
The Zhuhai city government will provide a 500,000-square-metre site on which a Sunwoda subsidiary founded specifically for the project will then construct the buildings and facilities.
Sunwoda also announced that it had received an order from SAIC, specifically for the ZS12MCE HEV hybrid model. Sunwoda had previously entered into battery cooperation agreements with Nissan and Geely for hybrid vehicles. Vehicles with Sunwoda batteries are also on the road in Europe: the Dacia Spring, a sister model of the Chinese Renault K-ZE City, uses Sunwoda cells.
Among Chinese battery cell manufacturers, Sunwoda is just among the top ten with a market share of 1.3 per cent in 2021. With 1.6 per cent, Farasis Energy is in ninth place, Eve Energy and Tafel New Energy share 8th place with 1.9 per cent.
