After being thrown into a pole, Rimac’s upcoming supercar is closer to your driveway.
- The Rimac Nevera completes its crash test requirements with a final side pole test.
- The upcoming Nevera carries a hefty $2.4 million price tag and will have 150 examples.
- The 1914-hp all-electric supercar can hit 60 mph in less than two seconds.
Crash tests are invaluable. They show just how dangerous collisions are and force automakers to consider what happens after their cars get into the hands of customers. Fortunately, small-batch supercars aren’t exempt from these ever-important tests. The latest to wrap up testing: Rimac’s Nevera.
Documented by the UK’s Carwow, the Rimac Nevera’s final crash test was a pole side impact. Translating that into normal speak, the sleek, sporty coupe was attached to a sled and thrown at a fixed pole at roughly 20 mph. While this test is at a relatively low speed, it yields valuable information because there’s little distance between the impact and the driver.
The test uses crash dummies and a plethora of sensors to see how the impact is transferred into the prospective passengers. As the video shows, not all crash test dummies are created equal. Different tests require different dummies to get, as you’d expect, different data. These dummies also see some paint before the test sled is fired to track where the dummy hits the various airbags.
This Nevera has been here before. Considering the low-volume nature of high-end sports cars, this Rimac Nevera was also used in frontal collision tests, according to the video above. This helps save a few pre-production and prototype examples of Rimac’s upcoming machine from seeing the crash-test graveyard.
Not surprisingly, the Rimac Nevera passes the pole test. Automakers don’t rely exclusively on physical crash tests, and they first use computer-aided models to simulate them digitally.
In this case, damage to the Nevera isn’t too severe, and the sensors show that the test went better than Rimac expected.
