The midsized sedan segment is one of the most competitive segments in the auto industry, as it features popular cars like the Toyota Camry and the Honda Accord. This competition has been good for customers, as many midsized sedans are good enough to be recommended by Consumer Reports. Unfortunately for Chevrolet, there was one midsized sedan that wasn’t recommended by Consumer Reports, and it’s the 2022 Chevy Malibu.

According to Consumer Reports, the midsized sedan segment has a lot of great cars. The best midsized sedan right now is the popular Honda Accord, and it has an overall score of 88 out of 100. Similarly, the Accord received an 89 out of 100 on its road test. The Honda sedan also did well on its predicted reliability rating and owner satisfaction score, as it got a 4 out of 5 in both categories.
While the Accord scored higher than the Toyota Camry, Consumer Reports still gave this popular Toyota sedan a very good review. The 2022 Camry has an overall score of 84 out of 100, and it got an 86 out of 100 on its road test. Like the Accord, the Camry also received a 4 out of 5 for its predicted reliability and owner satisfaction scores.
These weren’t the only midsized sedans that Consumer Reports recommended, however. Cars like the 2022 Subaru Legacy and the 2022 Volkswagen Passat are also recommended by Consumer Reports.
The 2022 Chevy Malibu is much worse than its peers
The one midsized sedan that didn’t get recommended is the Chevrolet Malibu, and it is the worst-rated midsized sedan on Consumer Reports right now. This is thanks to its overall score, which is sitting at 55 out of 100. It’s not all bad news for Chevrolet and Chevy fans, however. While the Malibu has some apparent issues in certain areas, it also has some clear successes.
For example, Consumer Reports gave the Chevy Malibu a road test score of 80 out of 100, which isn’t that different from what the better-scoring midsized sedans got. However, what dragged the Malibu down was its predicted reliability rating and its predicted owner satisfaction score. In both of those categories, Consumer Reports only gave the Malibu a 2 out of 5, which ultimately is why the car has such a low overall score.
The few things Consumer Reports liked about the 2022 Chevrolet Malibu
The Malibu performed well on its road test for two main reasons. First, its performance, while not spectacular, was good enough for a car of its size. Consumer Reports gave the Malibu 4 out of 5 for its performance, and its transmission, in particular, got a 5 out of 5 score. Secondly, while the Malibu isn’t a luxury car, its comfort and convenience features are also pretty good.
In fact, Consumer Reports really liked the comfortable ride that the Malibu provided. Its quiet cabin also helped make the Chevy more comfortable, and its roomy rear seats are also a good thing for passengers and families. On top of that, the Malibu has a 4 out of 5 score for its cargo capacity, which helps make it a more practical option for folks.
Furthermore, not only are the Malibu’s controls easy to use, but it’s also a fuel-efficient car. The Malibu gets 19 mpg in the city and 41 mpg on highways, for a combined rating of 29 mpg.
