Volkswagen has stated that the latest version of the Tiguan is coming to South Africa, and will be on sale from the third quarter of the year.
The third generation of the Tiguan will bring a host of new features, including a new steering wheel with touch controls.
Digitisation took place with the air-conditioning system, too, as it is now controlled through touch-sensitive sliders.
Another first for the Tiguan – as well as the Volkswagen model range – is an optional Harmon Kardon sound system with a 16-channel amplifier, eight speakers, and a subwoofer.
Exterior
The most notable exterior update to the new Tiguan is the redesigned front bumper.
The bonnet has also been given extra details, and a new radiator grille with LED matrix headlights is wider than that on the predecessor.
These lights house 22 independent LEDs and offer enhanced visibility for night-time driving.
At the rear, the Tiguan badge has been moved to the centre – below the VW badge.
New exterior colours are also available – Ginger Brown, Kings Red, Lapiz Blue, Night Shade Blue, and Dolphin Grey – concluding the exterior revisions of the SUV.
Driver assistance systems then fell into the upgrade path.
This includes lane change assist, which helps drivers stay in their lane – and reacts to vehicles moving in parallel as well as in oncoming traffic.
Emergency braking with front assist detects obstacles in the front of the SUV, and responds through an acoustic warning and the initiation of emergency braking.
New trim lines
The new model comes in three specification lines, called the Tiguan, Tiguan Life, and Tiguan R-Line.
The base derivative receives:
- Cruise control
- LED headlights
- MIB3 Infotainment system
- 17-inch “Montana” alloy wheels
- Leather multi-function steering wheel
On top of this, the Life trim gets 18-inch “Frankfurt” alloy wheels, climatronic air-conditioning, front and rear park distance control, and an electric tailgate.
The range-topping R-Line trim then gets 19-inch “Valencia” alloy wheels, ambient lighting, Vienna leather seats, an active info display, composition media system, multi-function steering wheel with touch-sensitive buttons, and keyless entry.
Optional extras for the range includes a black styling package, panoramic roof, trailer hitch, discover pro infotainment system, heads-up-display, Harmon Kardon sound system, area view cameras, the IQ drive package that includes cruise control and lane assist, and a trailer manoeuvering system.
Engine options
The new Tiguan range will be on offer with one diesel and two petrol engines.
First up is a 1.4-litre TSI engine which is connected to a 6-speed DSG gearbox.
It produces 110kW of power and 250Nm of torque, and it can reach 100km/h in 9.2 seconds while offering a top speed of 200km/h in the Tiguan.
A 2.0-litre TDI engine produces 130kW and 380Nm, is mated to a 7-speed DSG gearbox, and sprints to 100km/h in 8.3 seconds in the SUV.
It also offers a higher top speed than the base derivative, at 207km/h.
Finally, a range-topping 2.0-litre TSI engine produces 162kW and 350Nm, takes the Tiguan to 100km/h in 6.5 seconds, and reaches a top speed of 225km/h.
It is mated to the same 7-speed gearbox as the TDI variant.
South African pricing for the new Tiguan range will be announced closer to the launch date, said VW.
