Italian tyre-making giant used virtual reality systems to develop new range for popular cars and SUVs
Pirelli has launched its new Powergy tyre range in Australia to coincide with the Italian brand’s 150th anniversary.
Pricing varies according to factors such as size (from 15 to 21 inches), but the new Powergy tyre is claimed to be affordable and provide excellent wet-weather performance, fewer noise emissions and a lower rolling resistance to improve fuel economy.
Pirelli also says the new tyre, which suits most medium and large passenger cars, crossovers and SUVs sold in Australia, has been designed using “extensive virtual reality” technology.
Data analysis from a static simulator at Pirelli’s R&D headquarters in Milan was also used to create the new Powergy rubber, followed by track testing to validate the tyre.
Because of the digital processes involved that optimised tread pattern, tyre profile and maximised the tyre’s contact patch, Pirelli says fewer physical prototypes had to be used, which not only reduced waste but cut development time to 18 months.
Pirelli says the Powergy’s contact patch is “perfectly balanced, with uniform tread pressure to reduce braking distances and enhance the car’s controllability and driving precision”.
The chances of aquaplaning in severe wet weather are also said to have been reduced, thanks to special channels and grooves in the tread pattern designed to disperse water.
“It’s been a particularly trying time in Australia of late with the effects of the pandemic and La Nina particularly affecting the east coast,” a Pirelli spokesperson said.
“With more cars on our roads than ever before, and conditions on those roads being less than optimal with the amount of rain we have had, it’s never been more important to ensure that your car is fitted with the best tyres possible.
“The new Powergy range is safer, more fuel efficient and provides your car with significantly better handling, making it the ideal tyre to upgrade to.”
