News flash. Formula 1 races are kind of loud.
A judge in Miami this week ruled this week that the F1 Miami Grand Prix weekend scheduled for May 6-8 can go ahead as planned, despite a last-minute lawsuit field by residents of the Miami Gardens area who said the loud noise of Formula 1 can cause hearing damage.
Kind of ironic that the judge will hear none of that lawsuit. Miami-Dade Circuit Judge Alan Fine ruled on Wednesday that the race can go ahead as planned. The judge suggested that those fearing for their hearing should consider ear plugs or just staying inside that weekend.
“I think it’s important to have an objective measure of what the decibels actually are that would be affecting a plaintiff,” said Fine, who was quoted in a published report by the Miami Herald.
F1 Miami Grand Prix officials plan to take decibel level measurements throughout the weekend. Some of those measurements will be taken from the race circuit to a distance equal the distance from the homes of the residents filing the lawsuit to the circuit at the Hard Rock Stadium in Miami Gardens.
The judge said that residents were also welcome to take their own noise measurements for possible future lawsuits.
Miami and Formula 1 are in the first year of a 10-year race agreement.
