For those millionaires who face the agonising choice between buying a luxury yacht for the Med, or ploughing a six-figure sum into a luxury motorcoach instead to cruise the continent, one small US outfit has a solution – an amphibious motorhome made to travel on both road and water.
Created by both John and Julie Giljam, founders of Cool Amphibious Manufacturers International (CAMI), the Terra Wind RV was originally created back in 2004 but has been quietly updated over the years and still sells today for a towering price of $1.2 million (£850,000).
Measuring in at 12.9-metres long, in the flesh most will mistake the Terra Wind RV as just another luxury motor home for some retired millionaire couple but beneath its tacky black, beige and brown paint lurks an aluminium boat hull.
That explains how, when you reach the edge of a river or lake, instead of slamming on the brakes you can go full steam ahead and plunge the 15.5-tonne bus into the surf.
Powering the boat-on-wheels is a 7.2-litre inline six-cylinder turbo-diesel that produces a 330bhp and, on land, can see the motor home top out at an illegal 79mph.
On water, around 8 knots is the most you'll ever see, thanks to the efforts of the two 19-inch bronze propellers best efforts.
Switching from motor home to house boat is surprisingly easy. The wheels don't retract and all the driver needs to do is shift neutral on the automatic transmission and hit drive on the marine gearbox.
The concept in the video feature ugly manual inflatable 13-foot pontoons on either side but the production bus gets a pair of far more elegant automatically-deployable aluminium stabilisers.
Speaking of which, thanks to all the weight being position low in the hull the Terra Wind is claimed to be surprisingly stable and competent on the water even with swells of up to 4ft.
That said, its creators have not conducted sea trials and don't recommend any future Transatlantic crossing attempts.
Inside, the original Terra Wind concept came with a hideously dated teak kitchen, granite surface and marble flooring – but everything can be tailored to the individual customer's wishes and there's no evidence of downsizing, with fridges and appliances that wouldn't look out of place in a mock Tudor mansion.
The important take away, even from the old dated video, is space is plentiful and there's even a full-size bath tub.
Optional extras include a six-foot rear fishing deck and an amphibious trailer that can carry extra boats, jet skis or even a car or motorcycles but is likely to send the price tag of the Terra Wind to almost a million pounds.
That might sound ridiculous, but that money is what some high-end German motorhome-makers charge for their most luxurious land-based coach-based motorhomes.
An equivalent decent 12- or 13-metre-long yacht, meanwhile, that offers similar levels of luxury, will be priced from around £500,000 but, remember, add to that expensive mooring costs, extensive annual maintenance and the fact that most aren't that comfortable to actually live-in.
Compared to both of those then, the go-anywhere (almost) Terra Wind RV is the best of both worlds, but us? This land lover would probably layout £150k on a fast, comfortable GT and spend the rest on five-star hotels, preferably with an ocean view.
