Velotric, a new mobility startup founded by Lime’s original hardware team, has announced a crowdfunding campaign for its debut product – the Velotric Discover e-bike.
The Discover is the brainchild of Andrew Zhang, Lime co-founder who oversaw the company’s hardware division between 2017-2020.
The e-bike promises a top speed of 20 mph from its pedals and 65 Nm of torque assistance from a 500W motor. The bike comes with 3 levels of pedal assist and a 7-speed Shimano gear setup.
The Discover has a 692 Wh lithium-ion battery manufactured by LG and Samsung and promises to get up to 80 miles of range on a single charge. This, according to Velotric, would make the Discovery the most efficient e-bike on sale today.
The entire bike weighs 29 kg and can accommodate up to a 136 kg load.
Prices start at $1,299 currently for the cheapest North American or EU models. The more expensive model, which features the 500W motor and larger battery costs $2,499.
Currently, 236 backers have pledged more than $240,000 for the campaign – with most prospective customers choosing the cheaper entry-level model.
The e-bike is equipped with both front (12V) and rear (6V) lights. The rear light includes a safety feature that provides a higher beam of light when riders brake. The rear light also has a reflector that integrates to the entire light.
A range of accessories are available for the Velotric Discover including an additional battery ($299), a front rack with cord ($25), and a water bottle rack ($7). The “Touring Package” ($299) includes all three items (battery, front rack with cord, bottle rack).
Shipping is set to start in December of this year and Velotric will give you a 2-year warranty on the new bike.
