The VW Polo GTI is a damn fine car.
It looks good, packs an angry turbocharged engine, and features modern technology and comforts.
Buying a new Polo GTI is also not complete fantasy territory, thanks to its starting price of R437,700.
For this amount you receive the fast hatchback with a metallic or pearlescent paint job, a 2.0 TSI engine – putting out 147kW – connected to a 6-speed DSG transmission, and some impressive performance.
0-100km/h is done in 6.7 seconds and the top speed of the Polo GTI is 237 km/h.
In the styling department, the GTI comes with 17-inch “Milton Keynes” wheels, a GTI body kit (which includes “sporty bumpers, boot spoiler and honeycomb grille with red pinstripe”), Art Velour leather interior trim, and an EDS electronic differential lock.
Other standard features on the car, which are all included at the base price, are:
- Auto-dimming mirror, automatic headlights, and an automatic rain sensor.
- Cruise control.
- A media system with USB ports.
- LED headlights and taillights.
- WeConnect Go and DataPlug support.
The optional extras
The feature list on a Polo GTI does not stop there, however, and you can add several optional extras to the car.
A first call for many will be the black Brescia 18-inch wheels, which come fitted with 215/40 R18 tyres and feature a “diamond-turned surface”. Price: R6,400.
Sport Select suspension, which lowers the Polo by 15mm and allows for driver profile selection support can then be added for an additional R5,900.
No top-end Polo GTI will be complete without a sunroof, and VW offers buyers a panoramic sunroof option for R12,550.
On the inside, you can add a leather sport seats package – with seat heating – for R9,950, along with climatronic air-conditioning for R4,150.
This provides two-zone climate control and an allergen filter in the car.
Additional interior features on offer are a smartphone interface with inductive charging, and a “Discover Media Navigation” system with voice control.
These retail for R2,550 and R13,200, respectively.
You can then add even more, including:
- Parallel park assist, park distance control, and a rearview camera – R8,750
- Keyless access – R5,400
- Active info display – R9,000
- Blind spot detection – R4,300
The total
If you select the optional extras listed above, you will pay an extra R87,300 to VW.
This brings your total purchase price for a a fully-kitted Polo GTI to to R525,000.
VW also provides a 3-year/45,000km service plan as standard with the vehicle – while an extended plan can be lengthened all the way up to 10 years and 300,000km.
To provide an idea of the pricing, a 6-year/150,000km service plan costs R16,595.
Tagging on a longer-term service plan means you can continue to roll in style for years to come.
