If you’ve driven anywhere since roughly 10:45 a.m. ET today, you might’ve noticed that Google Maps is down. That’s not great for a few reasons, chief among them being that the alternatives kinda suck. Apple Maps? C’mon. In all seriousness, though, it’s affecting users worldwide and there’s no word regarding when it’ll re-launch.
According to the Down Detector site, initial reports came in around 11 o’clock this morning with tens of thousands piling on ever since. Some are reporting error messages saying “Maps can’t reach the internet,” while others are just shown a blank, mapless world.
As you’d expect, Twitter is lit up about it.
This global problem is by far the largest outage Google Maps has experienced in a while. There’s no indication of what happened exactly, and Google hasn’t answered any requests for comment from media outlets thus far. Regardless, people are having a hard time navigating from A to B without the service, and it might not be isolated to Google Maps, either.
Some users are reporting that the Waze app isn’t working right, either. Waze is owned by Google so it’s possible that the two platforms are suffering from the same problem. It doesn’t seem to be so widespread with Waze, however, as Down Detector shows just over 100 reports at the time of publishing.
We’ll keep you updated as this story progresses, and in the meantime, consider revisiting Mapquest. Yes, it still exists.
