Up periscope: 70s Lamborghini pin-up never grows old
For a circa 50-year old vehicle design, the Lamborghini Countach LP400 – which can trace its birth back to the 1971 LP500 prototype designed by Marcello Gandini – still stands out like few others. This 1975 bright orange Periscopo version is one of only ten right-hand drive models, and is so named due to its unusual periscope-style rear-view mirror.
Paris blue: 20s still roaring with French rare groove
Much of the delight in strolling around Cartier’s “Style et Luxe” display at Goodwood Festival of Speed is to witness up close the mixture of styles, marques and models from across very different decades rubbing shoulders. Rewinding almost another half century from the Countach we spotted this 1923 Amilcar CGS, a rare Parisian two-plus-one, torpedo-bodied shape resplendent in electric blue paintwork and sporting solid and shiny metal wheels. Fresh!
American dream drop-top: 50s packs punch with Packard
By the 1950s cars from the US were getting very big and long, but there was still plenty of room on Cartier’s lawn for this 1956 Packard Caribbean Convertible. It was also the era of big chrome, with this tri-tone model sporting a chrome strip enveloping the whole car. The Packard brand was in trouble by the late 50s though (partly due to a problematic merger with Studebaker) and was dead by the end of the same decade.
British optimism: 60s Jaguar E-Type Lightweight Coupe
As we reported last month, Jaguar has been celebrating its E-Type’s 60th birthday in 2021, with collections of that model popping up all over the UK at classic car events. Goodwood’s Cartier lawn was no exception, but nonetheless showed some memorable examples, including this 1961 Jaguar E-Type ‘Lightweight’ Coupe, modified for racing with extensive use of aluminium alloys in its body panels and which scored numerous race victories with famous drivers, including Roy Salvadori, Graham Hill and Jackie Stewart.
Back to the Future with 80s DeLorean
Born in Belfast with superb Italian design courtesy of Giorgetto Giugiaro, the gull-winged DeLorean DMC-12 became iconic through its use in the Back To the Future film franchise. In real life it’s less than speedy, but a combination of small numbers made (9000), Hollywood connections and its controversial and quick demise have since made it sought after.
V10 fighting spirit from 00s Bristol
Curious and eccentric British automotive brand Bristol is a perfect candidate for a Cartier “Style et Luxe” lawn spot and this gull-winged 2006 Bristol Fighter deservedly bagged a space within the ‘Gullwing Exotica’ category near to the DeLorean. Powered by a Dodge Viper V10 engine the Fighter is considerably quicker though, sprinting from 0-60mph in four seconds and on to a 210mph top.
