Electrify America has announced that it will more than double the number of EV chargers it operates in the US and Canada by the end of 2025.
The plans, announced would see more than 1,800 fast-charging stations built across the US and into southern Canada.
What’s more, these charging stations would feature rapid 150- and 350-kilowatt chargers, significantly improving the viability of electric cars across North America.
“We have decided to double our current charging infrastructure in North America over the next four years to help meet the need for the rapid growth expected of electric vehicles by virtually all the auto manufacturers, and to help make EV adoption more accessible and attractive than ever,” says Giovanni Palazzo, president and CEO of Electrify America.
“We are making this commitment to support the plans by major automakers and the U.S. and Canadian governments to help the transformation to an electric mobility transportation system.”
The new plans would see Electrify American gain a presence in Hawaii, North and South Dakota, West Virginia, Wyoming, and Vermont – meaning the company would cover 49 states and the District of Columbia.
The plans will also add a new electric vehicle charging highway to the upper Midwest, making electric cars more viable in the region.
In Canada, meanwhile, the new plan means that more than 100 charging locations with 500 individual chargers will be built over the next four-and-a-half years.
These chargers will expand the network from its existing footholds in British Columbia, Alberta, Ontario, and Quebec. The new stations, set to be built in Saskatchewan, Manitoba, New Brunswick, Nova Scotia, and Prince Edward Island, should provide the infrastructure necessary for electric journeys from Halifax, Nova Scotia to Victoria, British Columbia.
“The addition of more charging stations, combined with the ability to serve nearly all models of EVs on the market and offer the fastest speed available today, will help propel Electrify America and Electrify Canada in the pursuit of our mission in advancing the deployment of zero-emission vehicles,” says Giovanni Palazzo.
Being able to serve almost all EV models on the market is key for Electrify America – Tesla currently dominates the charging infrastructure in the US with its dedicated network of superchargers. However, given that these do not work with EVs from other OEMs, the time is ripe for a challenger.
