Rebranding, ride-and-drive displays and the returning charity gala headline reborn Motown auto show
The North American International auto show (NAIAS, aka the Detroit motor show) is back and it seems organisers are keen to make up for the cancelled 2020 and 2021 editions with this year’s event set to feature hands-on experiences, ride-and-drives, traditional static displays and more.
Pencilled in for September 14-25 in Detroit, the NAIAS has a new logo for 2022 designed to emphasise the “global flavour of the show” with the blue and green colour scheme being reflective of the rapidly evolving “clean energy pathways and technologies transforming today’s mobility industry”.
“This year’s auto show plays a vitally important role in promoting emerging technologies particularly in the EV space,” show executive director Rod Alberts said in a statement.
“And, as the first auto show of the season and with the release of new models in the fall, we expect the show to be a pivotal player in consumers’ vehicle shopping and purchase decisions.”
According to organisers, multiple brands and exhibitors are planning to offer street course ride-and-drives along the new 2023 Detroit Grand Prix circuit, while others will be hosting hands-on and interactive showcases of the latest automotive technology both inside and outside of the main event venue (Huntington Place).
Public festivities will kick off on the evening of September 16 with the return of the black-tie Charity Preview gala, tickets to which will go for $US400 ($A556) each or $US700 ($A974) per pair.
The gala has raised more than $US100 million ($A139m) for children’s charities in south-eastern Michigan over the past 25 years and more than $US121 million ($A168m).
Like many other high-profile auto shows, the NAIAS fell foul to the impacts of the lingering COVID-19 pandemic in 2020 and 2021 with those events initially postponed before being called off altogether.
