A pair of Chevy Silverado Heavy Duty trucks were being imported from America to Australia, but they never made it. According to The Drive, the Silverado trucks were part of a tragic accident that sunk them to the bottom of the sea.
They were in one of 81 shipping containers that accidentally took a tumble off the YM Efficient vessel near the coast of Australia back in June 2018. The trucks quickly sank about several hundred feet before they were left in the ocean for 22 months.
The trucks had a hard landing after falling that massive distance. Plus, all the windows were down, so the trucks filled with water. They were left rotting and will now head directly to the scrap yard.
How much did the Silverado damage cost?

It’s hard to tell which Chevy Silverado HD models were destroyed by the sea. But we do know that the trucks were converted to right-hand models and probably have the Duramax diesel engine with the current exchange and shipping rates. But trucks probably reached $150,000 AUD.
Clean-up efforts are costing the Australian Maritime Safety Authority (AMSA) about $15 million AUD with the planned to recover 61 containers by the end of April. The trucks were in one of the first 10 containers that the team managed to pull up.
Recovery workers are entirely covered with personal protective equipment (PPE) for their safety. Scott Wilson, Project Manager for the AMSA, shared that the stench coming from the containers is horrific.
The PPE helps the bloke going down in there remain comfortable until everything can be aired out a little. Other containers that have been recovered were filled with tires, steel, copper, and other materials that can be recycled.
The truck and other materials will be separated by each panel and placed in the proper recycling bins. This entire process will be time-consuming and labor-intensive.
What’s new for the Silverado HD?
The sunken Chevy Silverado HD models are old, down, and out. But you can get a brand new 2022 Chevrolet Silverado 2500 HD. Pricing for this beast starts at around $37,500. But switching it to right-hand drive and shipping it to Australia probably increases the price quite a bit.
You can opt for the 6.6-liter turbo-diesel Duramax V8 engine for 445 hp and 910 lb-ft of torque. It’s paired with a 10-speed Allison automatic transmission. The standard engine is a 6.6-liter V8 engine with 401 hp and 464 lb-ft of torque. It’s paired with a six-speed automatic transmission.
The Silverado 2500 HD is primarily a carryover model from 2021. But it did gain a new Greenstone Metallic shade of paint and a power-adjustable seat. Also, you can now opt for the six-function Multi-Flex tailgate.
We recommend going for a new or used model that hasn’t been swimming with the fish for months! You can still take your truck to the beach and get it nice and salty, but don’t sink it to the bottom of the ocean!
