But according to a recent Consumer Reports reader survey, the new sedans described below are sure to leave you satisfied.

The Subaru Impreza might top Consumer Reports’ test results, but in terms of satisfaction, it’s not the highest-ranked compact. According to CR readers, the 2022 Hyundai Elantra is the most satisfying new compact sedan to buy. 73% of Elantra owners would buy their cars again, while only 58% of Impreza owners would re-buy their sedans. The Elantra even edges out the segment’s heavy hitter, the Honda Civic, in overall satisfaction.
So, what’s the reason for the 2022 Elantra love? For one, it offers a lot of value for money, which as we established, is more vital than ever these days. Secondly, the 2022 Hyundai Elantra is one stylish new sedan. Sharp styling isn’t necessarily a compact car hallmark, so the Elantra stands out. Finally, the 2022 Elantra handles and rides surprisingly well. And the new Elantra N should build on these qualities with even sharper handling and more speed.
Basically, the 2022 Hyundai Elantra is a well-rounded, reasonably-priced new compact sedan with attractive styling. And it doesn’t hurt that it’s Consumer Reports’ #3 compact car.

While the Elantra isn’t the #1 compact, the most satisfying new large/midsize sedan among Consumer Reports readers is CR’s top pick in that segment. It’s the 2022 Toyota Avalon, and 81% of owners would buy one again. The Avalon actually tied with the 2022 Charger, but the Dodge has a lower overall CR score.
MotorTrend also considers the 2022 Toyota Avalon one of the best new full-size sedans for the same reasons owners expressed to CR. It’s a comfortable, reliable, roomy car that offers near-Lexus levels of quality for a lower base price. Plus, despite its plush ride, it’s a surprisingly nimble car, Consumer Reports claims. And if you can find one, the Avalon TRD has all the regular car’s luxury qualities with even more sportiness.
Unfortunately, if you want one of the best new large sedans on the market, you’ll have to act fast. It looks like 2022 is the Toyota Avalon’s last model year, MT says.

As with the midsize/large category, the Consumer Reports reader recommendations for the most satisfying new compact luxury sedans require some explaining. Technically, the Tesla Model 3 ranks #1 here, but as it’s an EV, it’s part of a different segment. And while the Alfa Romeo Giulia is just below the Model 3 in overall owner satisfaction, its reliability issues likely kept it from a spot here.
As a result, CR’s most satisfying new compact luxury sedan is really the #3 car, the 2022 Genesis G70, with a 76% approval rating. And #2 on this list is the 2022 BMW 3 Series, with a 72% satisfaction rating that really makes it the #5 car. But it’s right behind the electric Polestar 2, which again, is in a different segment. Got all that?
Technicalities aside, the 2022 Genesis G70 and BMW 3 Series earn their appreciation for several reasons. Refreshed after its 2019 MT Car of the Year win, the G70 continues to offer serious style and tons of features for its price. And while it is a compact, so space is limited, it is a legitimate 3 Series rival in the handling department. However, its brakes aren’t as good as the BMW’s discs, Consumer Reports notes.
The 2022 3 Series, meanwhile, is slightly more spacious and fuel-efficient. And it’s recaptured some of the magic that its predecessor lost. However, the G70 has better interior materials and rides more comfortably.
But regardless of which you choose, you’ll likely be satisfied with both of these sedans.

New midsize/large luxury sedan shoppers have even more options than compact buyers when it comes to serving up satisfaction, at least in CR’s eyes. Consumer Reports readers ranked the 2022 Mercedes-Benz E-Class, BMW 5 Series, and Genesis G80 high in overall satisfaction. Respectively, 75%, 74%, and 72% of owners would buy their cars again.
Of these three new luxury sedans, Consumer Reports scores the 5 Series the highest: it’s the #2 car in this segment. Admittedly, maintenance costs can be high, and it’s lost some of its sporty nature. But those are the prices you pay for a well-damped ride, quality interior materials, plenty of space, and good fuel economy.
However, the 2022 Mercedes-Benz E-Class delivers all that and more. It has even better interior materials, a more stylish cabin, and better handling and steering than the 5 Series, MT says. Hence why the refreshed 2021 car won MT’s Car of the Year award.
Meanwhile, the 2022 Genesis G80 has the same overall Consumer Reports score as the 5 Series. It’s also just as quiet, comfortable, and slightly more spacious, though its engines aren’t quite as refined, MT reports. And while it doesn’t offer wireless Apple CarPlay, it offers just as much tech as the other new luxury sedans at a lower price. Plus, its interior outranks the 5 Series’ cabin in style.
Still, all three of these new luxury sedans blend comfort, technology, and quality in equally high measures. It’s no surprise that CR readers are satisfied.
