Continental Tyres has launched the Continental Tyres Bald Stars, a team of legendary bald AFL players with the sole mission to raise awareness of bald tyres.
New research from Continental Tyres has revealed that 32% of Aussies believe it’s safer to drive to live sporting events (as opposed to using public transport) but only 8% see unsafe or bald tyres as the biggest risk to their safety when out on the roads. Alarmingly, it is believed that 1-in-3 Australians are driving on bald or unsafe tyres.
To help educate the nation on the dangers of bald tyres, a team of AFL legends who happen to be bald have been called up to the squad to highlight the fact that bald is unstoppable both on the field and on the road.
The Continental Tyres Bald Stars team is made up of bald AFL greats past and present including Barry Hall, Nathan Jones, and Bachar Houli, as well as Collingwood’s Steele Sidebottom and St Kilda’s Zak Jones and Paddy Ryder.
Aussies will spend over 5 million hours on the road travelling to live sporting events each month with close to one-third (28%) spending 15–30 minutes on the road before getting to their destination. 53% of fans chose to drive themselves to the game, rather than taking the train (25%) or getting a lift (10%). This figure increases to 57% when it’s raining or wet – meaning almost 6-in-10 Aussies will drive in unsafe road conditions to get to their regular sporting events.
“The statistics are alarming. We want people to get to the football safely, particularly if you’ve got kids in the car. We encourage all Australians to get their tyres checked regularly to ensure safety on our roads – especially as we approach winter and conditions get wetter,” says Barry Hall, Continental Tyres Bald Star.
If your tyres are bald or not working properly, it can have a dramatic effect on how your car handles, brakes and steers in all weather conditions, especially in the wet. As well as the performance of any of the car’s lifesaving safety systems such as antilock brakes or stability control.
To support the initiative, Continental Tyres has partnered with the charity Youthsafe, which educates young drivers on road safety and are selling the limited-edition Bald Stars players’ signed jerseys. All money raised will be donated to Youthsafe with Continental Tyres matching every donation.
