Have you ever looked up manufacturer’s specifications for a vehicle’s cargo room, and then been completely surprised when you see it in person? You may be getting fooled about your car’s cargo space, but it’s not because of any nefarious plan. Automakers mostly follow the J1100 industry standard set by the Society of Automotive Engineers, which has specific criteria for measuring trunk and hatch areas. But, all of these numbers are self-reported.
Cars.com found these figures to be inconsistent, and began collecting real-world measurements from car reviews. Its reviewers measure for real-world storage area based on a special methodology to find usable space—not just maximum available, technical space.

9. The 2022 Audi A3 sedan has 12.8 cu. ft. of cargo space

As reviewed and measured, the 2022 A3 Premium Plus offered only 12.8 cubic feet of trunk space. That’s not much, even for a compact luxury car. But, it’s enough for a suitcase or two, and the A3’s attractive starting price and fun engine options may be enough to balance out the low cargo room.
8. The 2020 Cadillac CT5 sedan has 13.3 cu. ft. of trunk space
The Caddy CT5 ranks pretty low among sedans with the biggest trunks, but that’s likely because of the attractively savage design of the luxury car’s rear end. With lines like that, there’s not much left for storage. Still, 13.3 cubic feet of usable trunk space offers enough for a short weekend getaway.

The 2021 RC 350 F Sport is a sports car with 15 cubic feet of storage room in the trunk. Figures like this make it one of the more convenient and flexible models in its class. But, you can do better than a Lexus for a small luxury car.
4. The 2021 Genesis G80 sedan has 16.1 cu. ft. of trunk room
Like its smaller sibling, the 2021 G80 Prestige 3.5T sedan offers plenty of cargo space for a luxury sedan. 16.1 cubic feet of usable trunk space is nothing to sneeze at, and the Genesis offers plenty of comfort and tech features to round out its appeal.

The 2021 BMW 540i Premium M Sport was measured with a whopping 17.9 cubic feet of trunk space. That’s quite a bit for a midsize luxury car, and plenty of space for convenient storage of basic items. You may still need to consider a roof rack system if you want to carry a lot of cargo in a BMW 5 Series sedan.

Even the best sedans with the most cargo space can’t touch the cargo capabilities of a wagon. The 2022 Mercedes E450 All-Terrain ranked the highest on this list with over 21 cubic feet of usable cargo room behind the rear seat. That’s not necessarily that impressive for a wagon. However, it is good for a luxury car.
