Malaysia’s best-seller, the second-generation Perodua Myvi, receives a makeover to start 2015 on a strong footing. Besides revised styling, the new model is also claimed to offer improved safety, better features, and more competitive pricing.
Basic platform and mechanical running gear of the vehicle remains unchanged, but Perodua has strengthened the vehicle’s structure for better front impact absorption, thus improving its ASEAN NCAP rating from three to four stars. Alongside the improved structure, dual airbags and ISOFIX mounts are standard, whilst ABS and EBD are present in all but the lowest grade models. Electronic stability control remains absent.
A number of features that were first pioneered on the Axia launched last year have been transferred across to the Myvi as well, most notably front parking sensors and the anti-snatch hook built on the front passenger seat. As mentioned in our reviews of the Axia, this unique hook, a world first from Perodua developed in response to Malaysian needs, is attached directly to the seat’s frame and cannot be retrofitted as an after market installation.
With no change to its running gear, Perodua continues to offer the new 2015 Myvi with a selection of two engines, 1.3- and 1.5-litre, each in turn with a choice of two trim levels – Standard G and Premium X for the 1.3, SE and Advance for the 1.5. Buyers can further choose between manual and automatic transmission for the 1.3 Standard G and 1.5 SE variants, whilst the 1.3 Premium X and 1.5 Advance are exclusively automatic. On-the-road prices with insurance for private registration in both Peninsula and East Malaysia are summarized below.
The new prices represent reductions of between RM400 and RM500 for the 1.3-litre variants and between RM2,500 and RM2,800 for the 1.5-litre variants. Perodua President and CEO, Datuk Aminar Rashid Salleh highlights that combined with additional equipment and improvements made to the vehicle, the new Myvi offers up to RM4,500 better value than before.
Externally, the new Myvi’s appearance sports considerable differentiation from its pre-facelift predecessor and also between its 1.3- and 1.5-litre variants. The front fascia, in particular, has been extensively altered; one notable cost down measure is the removal of projector headlamps that were previously standard with the pre-facelift model from the 1.3-litre variants. At the rear, the tail lights retain their existing configuration although the 1.5 switches to clear lens housing. Bumpers, as you would expect, are reprofiled with the rear diffuser look.
Open for booking since last week, the new Myvi officially goes on sale immediately and is available with a selection of six colours, two of them new. The four existing colours – Ozzy Orange Metallic, Mystical Purple Metallic, Glitering Silver Metallic, and Ivory White Solid – are available for all variants. For the two new colours, Cosmic Gold Metallic is exclusive for the 1.3, whilst Electric Blue Metallic is offered only for the 1.5. The new Myvi is covered by a 5-year / 150,000km warranty.
