With South African petrol prices reaching a new all-time high in November, a fuel-efficient hybrid might be on the mind of many motorists.
Hybrids not only boast lower fuel consumption figures than their petrol-powered siblings, they generally have more power and torque thanks to their electric motor, too.
Fortunately, a host of manufacturers have hybrid options on offer – with 2021 seeing a decent increase in variety.
The market
Toyota released four hybrid vehicles in 2021. An updated Prius, Corolla Sedan Hybrid, and RAV4 Hybrid – as well as the new Corolla Cross Hybrid.
Toyota’s luxury arm Lexus also has many hybrid models on offer, although these tend to be rather expensive.
Apart from Toyota and its subsidiaries, the most prevalent hybrid builders in South Africa are Land Rover and BMW, with these companies accounting for the majority of high-end hybrids.
As such, there are limited options at the lower end of this market – and not one example under R400,000.
Below, we detail the 10 cheapest hybrids you can currently buy in South Africa. If multiple options in one model range are hybrid, we only listed the cheapest one.
