Rare American classics are what Rhinebeck is all about, but foreign machinery will be there as well.

In less than three weeks the Rhinebeck Spring Car Show will return to the leafy upstate New York town, bringing with it hundreds of rare machines we’ve missed seeing in the frigid winter months. One of the earliest and largest shows of the season in the northeast, alongside Spring Carlisle, the annual Rhinebeck weekend always manages to surprise with rare American and foreign cars in a small-town setting.
Over the years visitors have seen everything from a Tatra 613 to an AMC Matador station wagon on the Dutchess County Fairgrounds, with a deep variety of American cars making the Rhinebeck show a treat for fans of obscure automotive trivia. After all, where else can you see a DAF 66 just a few yards away from an Edsel Ranger? (Only at Carlisle perhaps, but never on the same weekend).
This 1975 DAF 66 is one of the rare foreign classics we’ve spotted in Rhinebeck in recent years.

This year’s show will once again feature a large swap meet on Friday, May 6, from noon to 5 pm. Saturday will see rods and customs take to the field, along with pickups and sports cars.
Mother’s Day Sunday, May 8, is the day of classic cars, and that’s when rare machinery from all over the northeast will converge on Rhinebeck, with 60 antique and classic classes on the field.
If there is one thing Rhinebeck is known for, it’s tidy examples of American cars from the 1950s through the 1970s, the kinds often overlooked on the auction circuit or at various muscle-car gatherings. Rhinebeck excels at drawing out the typical suburban runabouts of decades past, the kind that might now exist in just a dozen examples in concours condition, like an Edsel Villager station wagon. The once-common cars of yesteryear are what Rhinebeck is all about.
