Our man Dan third-fastest in first Formula 1 outing for 2022
Daniel Ricciardo has opened his 2022 Formula 1 campaign with the third-fastest time on day two of pre-season testing at Barcelona in Spain.
He failed to match the pace of his McLaren teammate Lando Norris, who was quickest on the opening day, but says he is still pleased with how things went on the second day of running for the new year.
Ricciardo’s quickest time was 1 minute 20.288 seconds, compared with 1:19.568 for Norris, but it is impossible to make a genuine assessment because no-one but the teams know exactly how they are running the cars.

Charles Leclerc was quickest on Day 2 with Ferrari, but he also failed to match Norris’s Day 1 pace with a 1:19.689.
Still, there is early proof that Ferrari will be fast this year, as Formula 1 moves to all-new technical regulations that bring new-look cars and even 18-inch Pirelli racing rubber.
The one big surprise from Day 2 is that Lewis Hamilton was slowest of all with his Mercedes-AMG, although his new teammate George Russell ran fourth.
Ricciardo completed 126 laps during his McLaren running and is happy with the outcome.
“A good day from many angles. I think reliability was great,” he says.
Charles Leclerc
“That’s on the team and everyone who’s worked hard to put this car together, so massive thank you to them.
“They’re pretty awesome to build a whole new car, put it on track and have it run so smoothly, so big thanks to them again.
“Both days have been over 100 laps, which for me and Lando gives us more opportunity to learn the car and push ourselves, so really pleased with that. We’ve got some good strengths and we just need to keep working on a few of the areas where we can improve.”
