The Ford Fiesta was the most commonly stolen car in the UK in 2020, according to figures held by the Driver and Vehicle Licencing Authority (DVLA). Last year 3,392 Fiestas were recorded as stolen – 1,008 more than in 2019. The high number could be explained by the fact that it is the most popular car with customers, with 49,174 registered in 2020. That logic doesn’t explain why the Range Rover came second, with 2,881 thefts.
Luxury SUVs are popular with criminals as they fetch higher values on the black market, and they are especially targeted by gangs who carry out keyless car thefts, in which devices are used clone the signal of an owner’s key fob to gain access to the vehicle. The BMW X5 and Mercedes-Benz GLC are also on the list.
The DVLA data was obtained by Rivervale Leasing via a Freedom of Information request, and also shows that the Volkswagen Golf, another very popular car with customers, is the third most stolen vehicle in Britain. The data also reveals a total of 74,769 vehicles were reported as stolen in 2020, which is a rise of 20,000 on 2019’s figure. The top 15 most stolen cars in 2020 is shown below.
