The petrol is more powerful but the diesel has more torque; which one will win this drag race?
If there is one vehicle manufacturer that hasn’t compromised ever when it comes to offering class-leading performance, it has to be Mahindra. In recent times, the home-grown UV maker has come up with new-generation SUVs with class-leading performance outputs, with the XUV700 being the prime example of it. Both the petrol and diesel-powered versions of the Mahindra XUV700 offer excellent power and torque outputs, which are much ahead of those of their respective direct rivals.
Many of us have a dilemma about which one among the two is the faster version of the Mahindra XUV700, the petrol-powered or the diesel-powered? A video from the YouTube channel of Ashish Beniwal clears out the air surrounding this confusion through a drag race between the two.
Mahindra XUV700 Petrol Vs Diesel: The Contenders
The two contenders here –Mahindra XUV700 petrol-automatic and Mahindra XUV700 diesel-automatic – look the same on the outside. However, both versions of the XUV700 have entirely different hearts under the hood.
The 2.0-litre four-cylinder turbocharged petrol engine in the XUV700 petrol-automatic produces 200 PS of maximum power and 320 Nm of maximum torque. Whereas, the 2.2-litre four-cylinder diesel engine in the XUV700 diesel-automatic pumps put 185 PS of power and 450 Nm of torque. Both the versions of the XUV700 get 6-speed automatic transmissions paired to their engines.
XUV700 Petrol Vs Diesel: Drag Race
Torque offers quick acceleration but the weight of the diesel XUV700 is higher than the petrol version
The drag race consisted of a total of six different rounds. The drivers remained unchanged in the first five rounds, but in the final sixth round, they swapped their XUV700s.
In all the rounds, the XUV700 diesel-automatic gave a challenge to the petrol-automatic version, but it is the petrol-powered version that emerged as a winner. In the third and fourth rounds, despite the petrol-automatic version having late starts from the standstill, it successfully managed to catch up and win towards the end.
Both the cars here get an automatic transmission
While the peak torque output of the diesel XUV700 is significantly higher than that of the petrol XUV700, the peak power output of the petrol XUV700 is slightly more than the diesel XUV700. While both the engines here are turbocharged, the turbo-lag is a bit more pronounced in the diesel version of the XUV700.
In addition to it, the petrol engine of the XUV700 revs much smoother till its redline, which is at a higher RPM as compared to the diesel engine. This difference in the way these versions of the XUV700 perform in a flat stretch gives the petrol XUV700 a substantial advantage over its diesel-powered counterpart.
Who do you think won the drag race?
However, the diesel XUV700 is no slouch either. With class-leading power and torque outputs, it promises to be faster than its direct rivals like Tata Safari, MG Hector Plus and Hyundai Alcazar.
Which one of the two versions of the Mahindra XUV700 will you choose? Let us know in the comments section below.
