While the Toyota Urban Cruiser scored a decent 4-star rating, the i20 and Creta ended with below-average 3-star ratings
Just after a few days of testing the Nissan Magnite, Renault Kiger, Honda City fourth-generation and Honda Jazz, Global NCAP included the Hyundai i20, Hyundai Creta and Toyota Urban Cruiser for its next batch of cars to be crash-tested for its ‘safer cars for India’ campaign. Following are the results of all the three cars tested in the latest batch by Global NCAP for its crash tests.
Hyundai i20
The latest version of the Hyundai i20 secured a 3-star rating in the Global NCAP crash tests. The premium hatchback from the Korean carmaker scored 8.84 points out of 17 in adult occupant protection and 36.89 out of 49 in child occupant protection.

Hyundai i20 scores three stars for adult and child occupant protection by Global NCAP
In the tests, the Hyundai i20 was rated to have an unstable body-shell and foot-well area and is not capable of withstanding further loads. While the driver’s chest area has weak protection, the knees of the driver and co-passenger have adequate protection. The i20 comes with ISOFIX mounts for child seats as standard but gets only a lap-type seat belt for the middle passenger at the rear.
With this score, the Hyundai i20 lags much behind the Tata Altroz, which has a commendable 5-star rating in the Global NCAP crash tests. The other two rivals of the i20, Honda Jazz and Volkswagen Polo, too have scored 4-star ratings, despite being considerably older than the i20. The other two chief rivals, Maruti Suzuki Baleno and Toyota Glanza are yet to be tested by Global NCAP.
Hyundai Creta
Like its hatchback sibling, the Hyundai Creta is also a high-selling model for the Korean carmaker in India. However, it too posted a below-average 3-star rating in the Global NCAP crash tests. Like in the i20, the body-shell and foot-well area of the Creta has been rated as unstable, while the SUV is not capable of withstanding further loadings.
However, what’s even worse for the Creta is that it scored lesser overall points than the i20, despite it being a bigger and more expensive vehicle than the i20. The Hyundai Creta scored just 8.00 points out of 17 for adult occupant protection and 28.29 points out of 49 for child occupant protection. The base variant of Creta used in the test, misses out on ISOFIX mounts for child seats.
The Creta is currently the best-selling car in the segment
While the protection for the passenger’s head and chest and driver’s and passenger’s necks were rated good, the same for the driver’s head and chest was rated only adequate. With these scores, the Hyundai Creta emulated the footsteps of its sibling Kia Seltos, with which it shares its K2 platform. The Kia Seltos also secured a 3-star rating in the Global NCAP crash tests in 2021.
Toyota Urban Cruiser
Like its badge-engineered sibling Maruti Suzuki Vitara Brezza, the Toyota Urban Cruiser secured a 4-star rating in the Global NCAP crash tests. The sub-compact SUV from Toyota scored 13.52 points out of 17 in adult occupant protection and 36.68 points out of 49 in child occupant protection.
For the Toyota Urban Cruiser, Global NCAP testers said that the body-shell and foot-well area are stable and capable of withstanding further loadings. In the tests, the driver’s and passenger’s heads and neck proved good, while the driver’s and passenger’s knees have marginal protection. The Toyota Urban Cruiser, like the Vitara Brezza, comes with ISOFIX mounts for child seats as standard.

Apart from the Toyota Urban Cruiser and Maruti Suzuki Vitara Brezza, the Nissan Magnite and Renault Kiger are the two-other sub-compact SUVs that scored 4-star ratings in the Global NCAP crash tests. However, the Tata Nexon and Mahindra XUV300 lead the pack by having commendable 5-star ratings in the same tests. The other two chief rivals, Hyundai Venue and Kia Sonet are yet to undergo these crash tests.
