Driving with low pressures not only rips yours tyres and rims to shreds, but can also lead to accidents
There is a reason why it is recommendable to drive your car with optimal air pressure in tyres. Driving a vehicle without the air pressure recommended by the car manufacturer has adverse effects on the driving dynamics, fuel efficiency and life of tyres.
Have you ever wondered how extreme can be the results if you drive your car with a negligible amount of air in one of its tyres? This unthinkable, and to some extent an utterly foolish task, is shown through a video by Crazy XYZ.
Driving a car with no tyre pressure
In the video, a person drives a Mahindra Scorpio after deflating the front-right hand side tyre completely. Before starting the drive, the presenter clearly states that driving a vehicle with a deflated tyre is extremely dangerous and should not be pursued in any condition. It is unclear in the video that for how many kilometres he drove the Scorpio with the deflated tyre.
However, the owner wanted to see how long the Scorpio will hold up with a tyre burst
In the video, it is visible that the presenter is putting a lot of effort to drive the vehicle since the contact patch of the tyre increases significantly with the surface. The presenter drove the Scorpio at constant speeds between 10-15 km/h. Continuous driving gradually deteriorates the tyre condition, which starts heating up significantly due to the much quicker burning of rubber.
This video by YouTuber CrazyXYZ demonstrates the consequences
At one point in time, the tyre gives up eventually and deteriorates completely, due to which the internal parts of the tyre and rubber wear out completely. However, the presenter didn’t stop driving and drove even further. At this instant, the Scorpio is moving barely on the leftovers of the tyre. The vehicle maintained most of the contact patch through the steel wheel on which the tyre had mounted.
Towards the end of the video, the presenter finally stops driving and shows how driving a vehicle with a deflated tyre can lead to complete deterioration, which could have resulted in a disaster.
What can go wrong?
Want to see what driving a car with a burst tyre feels like?
The video shows that driving with a deflated tyre continuously resulted in the complete burnout of the tyre, with only the leftovers of rubber remaining in the end. In our opinion, this experiment carried out by the presenter is utterly foolish and could have resulted in more drastic results, such as overturning vehicles or tyres catching fire.
While it is a matter of common sense not to drive a vehicle with a completely deflated tyre, driving your car even with low air pressure can be harmful. Driving your car with much lower air pressure levels in tyres can lead to tyre bursts, hydroplaning, faster wear rate, a significant drop in fuel efficiency, the longer time required for braking or lack of traction even on smoother surfaces.
