Electric cars can be very fast and here are a few options that are made-in-India
In this day and age when fuel prices are rising like never before, the advent of new-generation electric cars in recent times is nothing short of a boon. There couldn’t have been a better time for electric vehicles to gain popularity among the masses facing the brunt of rising fuel prices.
Apart from having significantly lower running costs, electric cars also have much better outright acceleration over conventional IC-engine vehicles, thanks to the instant availability of torque. Here, we will be discussing all the fast electric cars made in India.
The fastest electric car made in India – Vazirani Ekonk
The popularity of electric cars are on a rise in India
This name might be unheard for many, but the Vazirani Ekonk is a jewel in the crown of Indian automotive history. The first-ever electric hypercar developed in India, the Vazirani Ekonk is a track-only hypercar which ranks as the fastest electric car in the country. Entirely made of carbon fibre, the Vazirani Ekonk weighs just 738 kgs, thus making it one of the lightest hypercars in the world.
The Vazirani Ekonk has a two-motor setup, with one electric motor placed on each axle. These electric motors team up to produce a combined power output of 712 bhp. This impressive power output surpasses the peak power produced by some of the supercars from iconic sports car makers like Lamborghini and Ferrari. With 712 bhp of power on tap and weighing 738 kg, the Vazirani Ekonk nearly achieves the magical power-to-weight ratio of 1:1.
The Vazirani Ekonk has already gone under testing at the National Automotive Test Track’s (NATRAX) oval, where the hypercar managed to achieve a top speed of 309 kmph. The Ekonk also covered the 0-100 kmph sprint in just 2.54 seconds. This quick time taken makes the Vazirani Ekonk one of the fastest accelerating cars in the world. Vazirani, however, hasn’t revealed the details of the battery pack of the Ekonk, which is said to have unique trademark ‘DiCo’ cooling technology.
Hyundai Kona EV
The Kona EV is not made in India but it is assembled in India
Among the mass-market electric cars sold in India, the Hyundai Kona EV is the fastest option. It is not fully made in India. However, Hyundai imports the car as a kit and assembles it in the Chennai plant to reduce the taxes.
This unique and niche product was launched in India in July 2019 and was the first-ever electric SUV to come out from a mainstream vehicle manufacturer in India. While the global markets have already received the facelifted version of the Kona EV, the Indian market continues to get the pre-facelifted version for now.
The Hyundai Kona comes with a front-wheel-drive configuration, with a front-mounted 100 kW electric motor, which produces 136 PS of maximum power and 395 Nm of peak torque output. The Kona EV can touch a top speed of 167 kmph and covers the 0-100 kmph sprint in 9.7 seconds. The Kona EV comes with a 39.2 kWh lithium-ion battery which offers a maximum driving range of 452 km.
MG ZS EV
Soon after bringing the Hector SUV in India, MG affirmed its presence in India with the introduction of the ZS EV towards the end of 2019. In a short period, the MG ZS EV became one of the best-selling EVs in the country. MG introduced a heavily reworked version of the ZS EV in 2022, which gets revamped front and rear profiles, an updated interior with more features and a new powertrain under its hood.
Powering the MG ZS EV is a new 130 kW electric motor mounted at the front of the SUV, which generates 176 PS of maximum power and 280 Nm of maximum torque. This motor enables the ZS EV to accomplish a 0-100 kmph sprint in 8.5 seconds and reach a top speed of 140 kmph. Also new to the updated MG ZS EV is a bigger 50.3 kWh lithium-ion battery, which churns out a maximum driving range of 461 km – the highest among the mass-market electric vehicles in the country.

The Tata Nexon EV gets a 96 kW front-mounted motor, which gives it a front-wheel-drive configuration. With a maximum power output of 129 PS and a peak torque output of 245 Nm, the Tata Nexon EV does the 0-100 kmph sprint in under ten seconds and has an electronically restricted top speed of 120 kmph. The 30.2 kWh lithium-ion battery offered in the Tata Nexon EV claims a maximum driving range of 312 km.
Tata Tigor EV
The Tigor EV is not as quick but it still packs a lot of power
The Tata Tigor EV might not be as fast as one expects an electric vehicle to be. However, for the purpose it has been engineered, the Tigor EV is quick enough for daily commuting duties within the peripherals of a city. Compared to the previous-generation Tigor EV, the new current-gen version gets more advanced Ziptron technology for its powertrain, which promises enhanced performance and drivability.
The Tigor EV sources its power from a 55 kW electric motor mounted in front of it, which generates 75 PS of maximum power and 170 Nm of maximum torque outputs. The Tigor EV can reach a top speed of 80 kmph, which is electronically limited for safety purposes, while it can do the 0-100 kmph in around 12 seconds. The juice for driving comes from a 26 kWh lithium-ion battery pack, which offers a maximum driving range of 306 km.
