The new Thar is only slightly more powerful than the Scorpio, which means that it is going to be a closely fought battle
Tugs-of-war is not the best way to judge the capabilities or power of any vehicle. But it does give us a dramatic view. Mahindra is on a roll with new cars like the Thar and XUV700. The Indian carmaker always had the expertise with the SUVs. One of the most popular models from Mahindra on sale in the Indian market is the Scorpio. Loved by all kinds of customers, the Scorpio has become an iconic model in the market.
But can a new Mahindra Thar beat the Mahindra Scorpio in a tug-of-war? Here is a video that finds out exactly the same.
This video by Manish Sharma shows the tug-of-war between the two SUVs. They do several rounds on different surfaces to find out the winner. Who do you think won this tug-of-war?
The Contenders
A tug of war between the good old Scorpio and all-new Thar
The Mahindra Scorpio participating in this tug-of-war gets powered by the tried and tested 2.2-litre mHawk diesel engine that generates a maximum power of 120 Bhp and peak torque of 280 Nm. This is a 4X2 variant and gets a manual transmission.
The Mahindra Thar is also powered by a 2.2-litre diesel engine but it is much more advanced compared to the engine of Scorpio. The Thar’s engine is newly developed and produces a maximum power of 130 Bhp and peak torque of 300 Nm. All the variants of the Mahindra Thar get 4X4 drive as standard. But since the Scorpio in this tug-of-war is a 4X2 variant, the Mahindra Thar driver did not engage the 4X4 system, which definitely would have given more advantage to the Thar.
Mahindra Scorpio Vs Thar Tug-of-war
So even the Thar did not engage the 4X4 system
The tug-of-war starts on the tarmac. After tying both the cars, the drivers start to drive in the opposite directions. The Mahindra Thar, which is in stock form dominated the round without putting in any major effort. The Scorpio felt powerless in front of the Thar. Even with the aftermarket wider tyres, the Scorpio lost the round.
After not getting satisfactory results, both the cars move to dirt
For the next two rounds, the cars moved over to a dirt surface to save the tyres. Even in these two rounds, the Mahindra Thar dominated over the Scorpio with absolute ease. There was not a single point during the tug-of-war where the Scorpio gained an edge over the Thar.
Conclusion
Want to know the results?
So what makes the Mahindra Thar win so effortlessly despite such a small amount of power difference? Well, the Mahindra Thar’s engine develops its maximum power and torque at a lower rpm than the Scorpio’s engine. This allows Thar to gain a quick advantage and overpower Scorpio.
Also, the Mahindra Scorpio used in this tug-of-war looks quite old. Over the years, the engine loses horsepower due to wear and tear. A new or a similarly aged Scorpio would be much more challenging to the Thar.
