Chery has lowered the barrier to entry to its family of SUVs with the launch of a more affordable “LiT” (pronounced “Lite”) in its Tiggo 4 Pro range.

Prices for the LiT start at R279,900, making it R29,000 cheaper than the previous base model, the Urban.

It runs on a 1.5-litre petrol engine with 83kW and 138Nm, which can be paired to either a five-speed manual or a CVT transmission. Fuel consumption falls in the range of 6.8l to 7.0l/100km, and it can accelerate from 0 to 100km/h in 11.5 seconds and reach a top speed of 180km/h.

As for equipment, the LiT has had to shave off a few items that come as standard on the other Tiggo 4 Pros in order to reach its lower price point.

It only has two front airbags, missing out on the side and curtain airbags in the rest of the range, and it doesn’t have automatic headlights, a leather steering wheel, artificial leather upholstery, or voice commands.

This being said, the crossover still comes with a lot of kit, including 16-inch alloy wheels, LED daytime running lights, hill assist, tyre pressure monitoring, rear parking sensors, a reverse camera, a multifunction steering wheel, a 3.5-inch colour driver display, air conditioning, fabric seats, Bluetooth, four speakers, and a 10.25-inch media screen with Apple CarPlay and Android Auto.

Also included is a 5-year/150,000km warranty, a 3-year/30,000km service plan, a 5-year/unlimited-kilometre roadside assistance plan, and a 10-year/1-million-kilometre engine warranty.
