Here’s what happens when you pit two off-road bikes in a drag race on a VERY slushy track
When you think of drag racing, images of drag bikes with extended swingarms and cars with turbos pop up in the head. But Bike World decided to do things a little differently and chose two off-road, racing them on a slush-filled track! Here’s how it went:
The Contenders
The KTM 950 Adventure is powered by a 942cc, V-twin motor putting out 105PS and 97Nm
The first contender in this drag race is the KTM 950 Adventure. Before you Google-ing the bike, let us tell you that the KTM 950 Adventure isn’t a part of KTM’s stable anymore and it was discontinued way back in 2006.
However, when it was on sale, the 950 Adventure was a proper hooligan off the road. Why do we say so? Well, because it draws power from a 942cc, twin-cylinder motor putting out 105PS and an impressive 97Nm. Moreover, the bike came with 245mm of suspension travel and 296mm of ground clearance, which means you could probably jump it from the first floor and still not bottom it out.
The bike being raced here, though, isn’t stock and comes with updates like a race fairing and an aftermarket exhaust.
Our second contender is the Indian FTR 1200, customised by Bike World for proper flat track riding
The second contender in this one-of-a-kind drag race is the Indian FTR 1200. This isn’t stock either and has been purposely built for flat-tracking duties by the folks at Bike World.
In its stock avatar, the Indian FTR 1200 produces 121 PS and 118 Nm of torque. This isn’t as off-road specific as the KTM 950 Adventure, though, and is more focused on having fun on the road.
KTM 950 ADV vs Indian FTR 1200 Round 1
In the first round, the Indian FTR 1200 gets a better start and keeps the lead till the end
In race 1, it’s the FTR 1200 that gets a dream launch of the line and edges ahead immediately. Both bikes struggle massively for traction and wiggle around while putting the power down.
The FTR 1200 keeps its lead towards the very end and ultimately takes the win.
KTM 950 ADV vs Indian FTR 1200 Round 2
In the final round, the FTR 1200 struggles for grip which gives the KTM 950 Adventure a crucial lead
In the next round, the KTM 950 Adventure gets a much better start, staying neck-and-neck with the more powerful Indian FTR 1200.
However, as they say, there’s no replacement for displacement and the FTR 1200 edges ahead once again, taking the win for the second time.
KTM 950 ADV vs Indian FTR 1200 Round 3
The FTR 1200, though reeling in the KTM, ultimately loses out, giving the KTM 950 a much-needed win
In the last and final round, the Indian FTR 1200 suffers from massive wheelspin and stays stationary for a split second. And in drag racing, a split second makes all the difference.
It’s actually the FTR 1200’s superior power that hands the KTM 950 Adventure this win
As the FTR 1200 suffers to get the power down, the KTM 950 Adventure surges ahead in the distance, taking a huge lead. Even with a significant power advantage, the FTR 1200 struggles to catch up to the KTM 950 Adventure and it’s ultimately the latter that takes the cake.
With 2 wins under its belt, the FTR 1200 is the winner here. Swipe up to read in detail and watch the video.
It’s actually the FTR 1200’s superior power that hands the KTM 950 Adventure this win. The host in the video reveals that he couldn’t go full throttle for the entire race due to the lack of grip, whereas the KTM 950 Adventure rider reveals that he could do that relatively easily.
Final Result
The race is much closer in the second round as the KTM gets a better start. But the FTR 1200 wins again
Had this been an obstacle course or MX course, the KTM 950 Adventure would’ve certainly prevailed over the FTR 1200, considering its epic off-road abilities.
With 2 wins under its belt, the Indian FTR 1200 is surely the winner here. But the KTM 950 Adventure is no slouch and manages to keep up with the FTR.
