The Blackbird will be positioned below the Harrier in the brand's current lineup
As reported, Tata Motors is currently working on a new mid-size SUV that will be based on the brand’s best-selling SUV, the Tata Nexon. The rumoured SUV will rival the likes of Hyundai Creta, Kia Seltos, MG Astor, VW Taigun, Skoda Kushaq, Nissan Kicks, Renault Duster.
Just like other Tata offerings, the Blackbird too will boast impressive safety ratings
A coupe like-design is what will give the Blackbird a unique and differentiating stance as compared to the Nexon.
The Tata Blackbird is expected to be based on an upgraded Indica Vista-derived X1 platform. This platform will have an approximate length of about 4.3 metres while the wheelbase on the other hand is expected to be longer by 50 mm when compared to the Nexon. More details about the styling however are yet to be known.
Powering the Blackbird could be a 1.5L petrol engine that is derived from the existing 1.2L turbo Revotron engine. This engine is expected to deliver over 150 bhp and will be offered alongside the existing 1.5-L turbo diesel engine. A diesel engine too is expected to be tuned to deliver better performance. Furthermore, we do expect the brand to offer both, manual as well as automatic transmission options with the upcoming Blackbird SUV.
We might see the Nexon and Blackbird sharing similar underpinnings
Looking at Tata’s popularity and Nexon's success in the EV domain, chances of an electrified version of this brand new SUV too can’t be ruled out.
If launched, the Blackbird EV will offer a larger battery pack and a more powerful setup, thus making it a more practical car for highway use when compared to the Nexon EV.
