The Contenders
Both cars here are Maruti Suzuki Baleno but from different life cycles.
Maruti Suzuki replaced the old Baleno with an all-new model
The older version of the Baleno here is the first facelifted version of the premium hatchback, which remained on sale in the Indian car market for three years between March 2019 to February 2022. This generation of the 2019 Baleno is powered by a 1.2-litre K12M petrol engine, which produces 83 PS of power and 113 Nm of torque.
The new model is 7PS more powerful than the older-generation
The other car here is the all-new Baleno that arrived in India last month. The new Baleno gets the new 1.2-litre K12N Dualjet petrol engine from the Swift and Dzire. The 1.2-litre K12M engine of 2022 Baleno produces a higher power output of 90 PS while pumping out 113 Nm of torque. Both these cars here in the drag race are manual variants, which come with a 5-speed manual gearbox.
Do you think the new Baleno will overtake the older-generation model?
The new version of the Baleno has a significant advantage of 7 PS over the older version. However, there are other factors like weight to be considered.
Old Maruti Suzuki Baleno vs New Maruti Suzuki Baleno: Drag Race
This drag race event comprised two rounds of 100m races on a flat stretch on a busy highway.
Round 1
It also gets stronger platform and more airbags than ever before
In the first round, both the cars started comfortably, but the older Baleno maintained a significant lead till the finish point of the drag race. The new Baleno had a slower start, and because of this, it failed to catch up with the old Baleno.
Round 2
There is a clear winner in this drag race
In the second round, both the Balenos had an equally good start. This time around, the new Baleno started with a clear lead. However, the old Baleno managed to catch up with the former and gradually passed off while maintaining a lead over the new Baleno. The old Baleno won this round as well.
Conclusion
SWIPE UP for this interesting drag race!
While the new Baleno has a more powerful engine over the old Baleno, the latter still managed to win both the rounds of the drag race. It indicates that one aspect, which always plays a hidden role in a drag race – power-to-weight ratio.
Compared to the 890 kerb weight of the older Baleno, the new Baleno weighs 970 kg – that’s a weight gain of almost 80 kg. The lower kerb weight gives a minor advantage of power-to-weight ratio to the old Baleno, which won both the rounds of the drag race due to this very reason.
