These cars converted to run on electric power have a running cost between Rs. 0.60 to Rs 1.00 per kilometre
All thanks to the continuously rising fuel cost, people are switching to more affordable alternatives and electric mobility is now picking up pace rapidly as well. Along with fuel costs, a ban on old vehicles is one of the reasons behind this trend.
Given these conditions, people are either opting for electric vehicles or converting their old ICE vehicles to electric iterations. In fact, the Delhi government has allowed old cars to run on public roads after converting them into electric cars. Here is how you can convert your old car to electric at affordable prices.
How To Convert Old Car To Electric
Instead of scrapping, owners can retrofit their cars with an electric conversion kit. Converting your old fuel-based car has become an easy job with the introduction of various conversion kits in the market.
Furthermore, Delhi Government recently set up dedicated centres for registrations of such converted electric vehicles. It is worth noting that the 10-year-old diesel and 15-year-old petrol vehicles can be re-registered and can easily be used in Delhi NCR after electric conversion.
How Good Is The Performance?
Performance and range depends on the motor and the battery pack that you buy
While the performance of an EV directly depends on the motor, battery packs, and the size of the car, most of these aftermarket conversion kits provide enough power. The claimed power output from these electric motors can vary from 15 to 20 kW. While the battery pack is available in different capacities, the overall range depends on the power the motor is consuming.
The range and performance however are largely dependent on the size and the weight of the car as more power will be utilised in order to run a heavier vehicle when compared to a small, lighter vehicle. Various manufacturers are claiming the running costs of such vehicles to be as low as 60 paise per kilometre to Rs 1 per kilometre.
How expensive is it?
Delhi Government has set up dedicated centre to register these converted electric cars
The cost of an electric conversion kit depends on the power of the motor and the capacity of the battery. According to the experts, retrofitting an old fuel-type vehicle with a 12kW lithium-ion battery and a 20kW electric motor could cost an owner about INR 4-5 lakh, excluding the cost of the car. However, the cost for retrofitting a two-wheeler with an electric powertrain will be much less depending on the battery type.
Under these conditions, these cars come out to be a good alternative to the expensive EV offerings like the Tata Nexon EV, Tigor EV, MG ZS EV, Hyundai Kona, etc.
