Crazy XYZ have converted a standard 2WD ATV into a floating machine complete with steering
DIY and modifications are not very popular in India. Still, there are many who want to get their hands dirty. Here is a group of youngsters who attach plastic drums to an ATV to try to make it float. Surprisingly it worked. Here is how they did it.

The Crazy XYZ team used a 2WD ATV for the task. They use four plastic drums to make the ATV float. To attach the ATV, they use steel pipes and attach it to the ATV using ropes and ties.
They attach oil drums to the ATV using steel rods
After attaching the drums securely to the ATV, they slowly put it down in the water. The whole floating device starts to float. They even start the engine and take it around in the water body.
This is the depth of water
The exact depth of the waterbody is not known but there is a WagonR submerged in the water and only the roof of the vehicle is visible. They start the ATV and open the throttle. Surprisingly, the ATV starts to move around in the water.
The ATV moves around the water body without drowning
Since the ATV have tyres with deep grooves, it displaces water and pushes the vehicle forward. They even try to steer the ATV and it works somehow. It is not the most efficient way for surfing on the water body but it does work.
And it floats as well
It is a 2WD ATV which is why only the rear wheels are working. If this had been a 4WD ATV, all the four wheels would have worked. It would move the ATV around much quicker.
What makes the ATV float?
But why do you think the ATV floated in water?
The drums increase the buoyancy and it becomes greater than the weight of the ATV. Also, the tyres, which are filled with air help the ATV to float around. But tyres with deeper grooves act like propellers and that is why the ATV could move around. It is simple science.
They even steer it around
But should you do it? Well, probably not. Water is toxic for engines and putting it in the middle of a water body can be dangerous. After some time, the ATV is half-submerged in water and we can see the engine case drowned as well. However, the air intake on ATV is located much higher, which is why the engine was still working.
Do you think this ATV can float on water?
After coming out of the water, they realise that the ATV is not moving in the forward direction. There is no power in the forward gear but it was moving in the reverse. This ATV gets a CVT transmission and it seems like the clutch is filled with water, which is causing it to slip.
Drying out the clutch can solve the problem but it can also cause catastrophic damages to the engine if a small amount of water enters the air intake. So unless you can afford to lose the vehicle completely, do not do such stunts.
