Auto Expo, also known as the Delhi Auto Show is set to return in 2023 after a COVID-19 induced hiatus. The 2023 Auto Expo will be open between the 13th and 18th of January for the general public.
The previous edition of the auto show, Auto Expo 2022, was cancelled due to fears about the COVID-19 situation. Organisers feared that the risk of transmission of the virus would be very high at an event visited by massive crowds as social distancing could not be guaranteed.
India’s largest auto show will open on the 11th of January, 2023 with a media day that is expected to feature the launch of multiple new cars and bikes. The 2023 Auto Expo will be officially opened on the 12th of January which will see dealers and special guests attend the event alongside the media contingent before the show is opened to the public the next day.
As in previous editions, the Auto Show will be held in Greater Noida, while the components show will be held in Delhi’s Pragati Maidan.
The last Auto Expo in 2020 took place in an even numbered year as had every show till that date since the event adopted the biennial format in 1996. The first ever Auto Expo took place in the year 1986 and the last show in 2020 had marked the 15th edition of the nation’s largest auto show.
However, the switch in 2023 to an odd numbered year is expected to be carried forward in the future as the Expo is expected to continue with its biennial format. 2023 will also mark the second time that the Auto Expo has been hosted in an odd numbered year. The previous time this happened was the 2nd ever edition of the Auto Expo which was held way back in 1993.
The Auto Expo has been the launchpad for the arrival of many new vehicles into the Indian market. However, automakers in recent times have been shying away from the event, preferring to reveal their new vehicles at standalone launch events.
However, one carmaker that doesn’t seem set to shy away from the Auto Expo stage is Maruti Suzuki. The carmaker has often used the Auto Expo to reveal brand new vehicles for the Indian market including the current generation of the Swift and the Ignis crossover. The company has also used the Expo to reveal new concept vehicles that herald the arrival of new members of the Maruti Suzuki stable a few years down the line.
Another brand that has used Auto Expo to show the world its ever evolving face is Tata Motors. Over the previous editions of the Delhi Auto Show, the Indian automaker has pulled the covers off concept vehicles that have turned out into production vehicles including the likes of the Harrier, Safari (both version of the H5X concept) and the Punch (based on the H2X) SUVs, along with the Altroz hatchback (first shown as the 45X concept).
Thoughts on Auto Expo 2023
2023 will mark the return of India’s largest automotive carnival after a wait of nearly 3 years. Hopefully, by the time the Expo arrives, automakers will have quite a few things to show us including we hope, a look into our electric future.
