Bethesda promised that Fallout 76 would have mod support, so where is it?
The Fallout and Elder Scrolls franchises are among the most popular for mods, even on console, which makes the desire for Fallout 76 mod support all the more understandable. Bethesda promised mod support was on the way pre-launch and many are wondering if this is even still on their radar. Luckily, it is.
Fallout 76 mod support, where is it?
Bethesda previously mentioned that mod support for Fallout 76 wasn’t going to go live until private servers were launched and leveled out. Since Fallout 76 is a live game and griefing is a real issue, the team wanted to make sure unlocking mod support wouldn’t increase cheaters, so the modding would be locked in a private server locked to all without an invite. Since private servers have been in the game for awhile now, many are wondering where the mod support announcement is.
Bethesda’s Jeff Gardiner recently clarified a few things about Fallout 76 during QuakeCon’s virtual showcase this weekend, including if they were still planning on mod support. While he didn’t mention a specific release date, Gardiner did say that “we are definitely still working on mod support, it’s coming.”
With the newly revealed Wendigo boss and fear system, we’re excited to take on some of these foes but swapping out their faces with Thomas the Tank Engine, as is PC modding custom, we just need to know when this support is actually arriving.
Bethesda has been a leader in mods for years now, being among the first to bring intricate mods over on to Xbox and PlayStation platforms and greenlighting hundreds of passionate fan overhauls for both The Elder Scrolls and Fallout alike. To bring that modding legacy into Fallout 76 is a no-brainer, but the online component does mussy things up a bit. You want mods, but you don’t suddenly want a ton of players enter God Mode among unsuspecting players. So, private servers? Good idea.
“We call it the heavy lift,” said Gardiner about the laborious task of bringing mod support into the game. “Meaning we’ve had to put a lot of resources into that…it’s not just drag-and-drop from the previous games because of the way our client-server architecture works. But it is coming, we’re working on it…just stay tuned.”

It will be interesting to see with all of the changes if Bethesda can turn around public perception regarding Fallout 76. They’ve already done a lot, including a new story and a ton of relatable NPCs and companions, but can they pull off what Hello Games did with No Man’s Sky? We shall see, but we love to see a solid comeback!
