The future of Destiny looks promising with Bungie announcing three new expansion that will be releasing over the course of the next three years.
Destiny 2 players have a lot to look forward to in the coming weeks, months, and years thanks to the newly announced Beyond Light, The Witch Queen, and Lightfall expansions that are set to release over the course of the next three years. There was a lot of news dropped in Bungie’s June livestream event regarding the future of the series, so here’s a quick rundown of the Destiny 2 roadmap for the next few years.
Destiny 2 Roadmap: Beyond Light, The Witch Queen, and Lightfall
The Destiny 2 roadmap looks very promising with three major expansions planned as we head into a new console generation. As we mentioned above, three new expansions have officially been announced for the game, with Beyond Light releasing in September 2020, followed by The Witch Queen in 2021 and Lightfall in 2022. Additionally, there will be a lot of smaller updates that will help advance the storyline and add new content between the expansions.
The Beyond Light expansion will focus on new Pyramid ships that have begun appearing above Europa, which belong to the “Darkness.” This group has been teased over the past few updates and is expected to be the main player in the coming months. The expansion will also introduce a new power called Stasis, which draws its power from the darkness. Further, the Exo Stranger will finally be making an appearance in Destiny 2 via the expansion. Unfortunately, we don’t have many details on The Witch Queen and Lightfall expansions yet, as they are still more than a year out. However, we can likely expect another set of seasons that will lay the groundwork for future expansions as their release date gets closer. If you’ve been away from the game for a while, seasons pretty much serve as dividers between expansions that set work to set up the story. For example, the Season of Arrivals kicked off on June 9 and will serve as a prequel for the Beyond Light expansion.

With Bungie revealing that the Destiny 2 roadmap up to 2022, this means that there are no current plans to develop a Destiny 3. The development team has also revealed that Destiny 2 will be playable on the Xbox Series X and PlayStation 5, but did not confirm if the game would be on the consoles at launch or if it would come later. Further, all content and purchases will transfer from current-gen to next-gen.
The road ahead looks quite promising for the Destiny community and with next-gen consoles coming in holiday 2020, there’s a lot of potential for the future of the series.
