Ubisoft has revealed the extra editions of Assassin's Creed: Valhalla. Which one should you buy?

Ubisoft has announced the upcoming bonuses and special editions for this winter’s Assassin’s Creed: Valhalla, which brings the series back to ninth-century England.

Which version of Valhalla is enough to satisfy your inner Viking? Let’s break it down by edition.

Assassin’s Creed Valhalla Pre-order Bonuses, Collector’s Edition Guide

Like most modern games, you can buy Valhalla in several different versions, ranging from the typical bare-bones digital copy to a $200 Collector’s Edition. At time of writing, pre-orders are up for the Epic and Ubisoft online stores; like The Division 2 last year, Ubisoft will be skipping Steam altogether and bringing Valhalla exclusively to Epic and its own uPlay store.

For pre-ordering any edition of Valhalla, you’ll get an additional mission, The Way of the Berserker, where the protagonist Eivor, to quote Ubisoft, “joins a legendary Berserker on a quest for revenge.”

The Standard Edition ($59.99) is just the base game, with no gimmicks.

The Gold Edition ($99.99) includes the game and a Season Pass, giving you access to Valhalla’s future DLC. If it’s anything like the release schedule for Assassin’s Creed: Odyssey, you can expect at least two mini-campaigns worth of additional content, as well as a possible surprise or two. No one was expecting Odyssey’s season pass to come with a remastered version of Assassin’s Creed III, after all.

There’s also a Gold Steelbook Edition ($109.99) which couples the bonuses from Gold with an exclusive steel case for a physical edition of Valhalla.

The digital-only Ultimate Edition ($119.99) comes with the game, the Season Pass, which includes all of the above, as well as an Ultimate Pack. This contains a number of cosmetic bonuses for Eivor and his pet raven, including a bearded axe, an Ursine Light Shield, a wolf mount named Hati, and a new set of armor called the Berserker Gear.

You also receive a unique boat, the Berserker Longship, with its own sails and a unique figurehead; a set of new Berserker-themed customizations for Eivor’s settlement in England; and a set of Runes, which sharpen your weapons or improve your gear.

The final edition of Valhalla is exclusive to the Ubisoft Store. For a cool $199.99, you can get the physical Collector’s Edition, which contains all the bonuses from the previous editions, as well as a 30cm statue of Eivor standing at the prow of her longship. (This was actually how the female version of Eivor made her debut to the world; the male version is in all the promo art so far.)

You also receive a 5cm Viking statuette of Eivor, the game’s soundtrack on disc, a physical copy of Valhalla in an exclusive steelbook case, and a numbered set of three lithographs depicting some of the game’s concept art, complete with a certificate of authenticity.

At time of writing, the Collector’s Edition is already out of stock at the Ubisoft Store, but hopefully there’ll be another shipment or two of them before the game comes out.
