The New Car Assessment Programme for Southeast Asian Countries (ASEAN NCAP) continues its push to promote the agenda of road safety to the public by successfully organizing the ASEAN NCAP Child Safety Day at the premises of Autoliv Hirotako Sdn Bhd in Seri Kembangan. The event was held with the objective of promoting child safety focusing on the use and proper installation of child seats.
Officiating the event was YB Tan Sri Datuk Sri Lee Lam Thye, Chairman of the Malaysian Institute of Road Safety Research (MIROS). In his opening address, Lee said, “It is important to use a child seat and to know the best benefit one would probably have by putting the right child restraint system on the car that can provide the best protection to your kids.”
Attending the event were over 100 guests representing various road safety agencies, original equipment manufacturers, Children’s Division from Department of Social Welfare, consumers’ organizations, as well as producers and distributors of child seats, who brought some of their products along for display.
Presentation topics covered during the event’s child restraint system (CRS) coaching session covered the overall concept of in-car child safety delivered by ASEAN NCAP Child Safety Specialist, Mr Yahaya Ahmad. Also present was Mr Yoshihiro Sukegawa, a specialist from Japan NCAP to share insights from his organization’s experience in handling CRS.
At the event, it was revealed that, in collaboration with Autoliv Hirotako, MIROS and ASEAN NCAP now have the capability to perform certified evaluations of child seat performance. These are carried out in a sled facility housed within Autoliv’s premises. Guests at the event witnessed a live demonstration of the forward-facing frontal impact test under UN Regulation 44.
Lee further added that, “Initiatives to make mandatory for young children to be placed in proper child seats in the car is being carried out by the Malaysian Government. This measure will come into full effect in 2019, where advocacy and awareness campaign to educate the public at large on the importance of child seats is to be carried out.”
