What have the Ferrari F399, rotary-engined DKW W2000, Rover SD1 and a Bugatti Type 51 got in common? In case you hadn’t guessed from the title of this article, they are all on the incredibly eclectic entry list for the 79th Goodwood Members’ Meeting presented by Audrain Motorsport.

One of the reasons we at GRR love our Goodwood Members’ Meetings is the sheer variety that they enclose. It’s a chance to branch out from the Revival’s glorious celebration of the circuit’s period history, to showcase some incredible machinery that you wouldn’t normally expect to see racing at Goodwood.

Obviously, as the Members’ Meetings are now into their eighth event, there are some fan favourite races that return each year. The ‘70s Group 1 touring cars of the Gerry Marshall Trophy for example, but each year there’s a new round of races and demos to get our teeth into and even we discover new cars and bikes we’ve never heard of.

While the full entry list can be accessed below, we just wanted to go through a few of the highlights we think stand out. And where can you really start for this year’s event than with the V10-era F1 cars that are set to scream their way around Goodwood.

Included in this very appetising section of the entry list are cars including the type of machine that Michael Schumacher raced in his third F1 season in 1993: the Benetton B193. The V10 era is covered from its very early stages to the very last, with the 1989 Arrows A11, which happens to hold the outright circuit record at Goodwood, set to star on track in the hands of multiple Goodwood record-holder Nick Padmore, while the McLaren MP4/20 from the final year of the V10-era is on static display.

Other F1 machinery to look out for includes the cool, but useless, Forti FG03, the brilliant, Adrian Newey-designed Leyton House CG901, a trio of Ferraris from the Schumacher era and McLarens from the MP4/5 to the MP4/15.

The other demo will see a huge line-up of Porsche 956 and 962s out on track as the sun sets on Saturday, to celebrate 40 years since the birth of Group C and the 956’s dominance of Le Mans. Important cars will include race winners from 1982, special-edition Japanese spec 962s and drivers include Derek Bell, John Watson and Tiff Needell.

Away from the demonstrations, other highlights include the slightly bonkers Sopwith Cup. A race for touring cars of the 1950s which focuses on the perhaps less celebrated racers. This includes Peugeot 203, Lancia Aurelia B20GT, MG Magnette, Nash Metropolitan and a gloriously silly Lincoln Cosmopolitan which races with a two-speed automatic gearbox – the most relaxed racing car ever?

The Robert Brooks Trophy may well be the prettiest grid of the weekend. The race, which commemorates the recently lost Robert Brooks, so important in the history of Bonhams and the winner of one of the first ever Revival races, includes stunning sportscars of the late 1950s.

The Weslake Cup is full of A-Series-engined Sprites and Midgets, while the Derek Bell Cup contains the F2 cars that started it all for the likes of Bell, Ickx and co. The two-driver Graham Hill Trophy will bring some of the Revival’s RAC TT Celebration flair to the weekend, with big-banger GT cars racing against each other including Ferrari 250 GTO and 250 LM, AC Cobra, Jaguar E-type and Porsche 906. Drivers in the race will include Marino Franchitti, Emanuele Pirro, Alex Brundle, Jochen Mass, Jason Plato, Nic Minassian, Benoit Treluyer and Andy Priaulx.

For those who love pre-war motorsport a pair of races will celebrate the spirit of motorsport’s earliest age. The A.F.P. Fane Trophy brings the Chain Gang back to life with a grid of just Frazer Nash racing cars fighting out on track. These rear-driven chain-drive racers should be spectacularly sideways the whole race no matter the weather. Alongside it the Varzi Trophy’s pre-war sportscars of the 1930s includes the very car in which that Achille Varzi himself won the 1933 Monaco Grand Prix.

There’s so much of interest on the entry list that we really can’t waste your time listing it in this article, so please do spend time perusing it to see just how amazing the weekend is set to be. Remember the entry list is provisional and liable to change up until the event.
