The presenter had interesting points regarding the car industry.
Last month, I Do Cars tore down a 1.0-liter EcoBoost engine from a Ford EcoSport, where the presenter concluded that the engine had a bad timing belt design. Now, he looked at another engine from the Blue Oval company's EcoBoost series that powers many Fords and other brands, like the previous-generation Ranger Rover Evoque.
The presenter got his hands on a 2.0-liter EcoBoost direct-injection, turbocharged engine pulled from a 2015 Ford Focus ST. The power plant, built on the same architecture as the Mazda L engine, made around 286 horsepower and 310 lb-ft of torque in the sporty hatchback.
The first thing the presenter did was to demonstrate that the engine wasn't locked up. But while doing so, he noticed there weren't spark plugs installed. This made the engine teardown a bit easier.
The intake manifold was the next component disassembled, which gave him access to see the condition inside the engine, and he didn't like what he saw. He just carried over with the teardown, starting with the valve cover. Unlike what Eric saw after removing the intake manifold, the parts under the valve and timing covers looked clean. Once he got a hold of the camshafts, he was surprised to see the components looked good.

Even after removing almost everything, the engine was still in good condition. He described the crankshaft as “pretty much perfect” – an absolute win for a guy who makes a living by selling engine parts.
The presenter wasn't sure why the engine ended up in a scrap pile. But he did point out a few interesting possible reasons why that's the case – one of which was to avoid paying for labor to see what's wrong with the engine. He might not have found what he was looking for, but at least he got parts in good condition to sell.
Considering that the Ford Focus ST is a viable option in the used car market, seeing a surviving old engine without visible damage is a good sign for enthusiasts looking to buy a sporty hatchback.
